Today was the first rescue where we were also able to offer the parents the opportunity to wait for us on the other side (obv a safe enough distance away from where we crossed back into unoccupied territory, but still. Waiting, nonetheless). I can’t even lie:
It genuinely brought tears to my eyes. After hearing the mother let out what has to have been the most tormented scream I’ve ever heard in my life, I just lost it. Couldn’t stop tears from escaping. 4 yrs worth of agony she’d been hanging on to finally let go of in that moment. Utterly heartbreaking.
Today really has been such a sad day, man. I usually don’t have such a reaction, but it really does hurt to see this kind of scene take place in Krakow. Like a bullet to the chest… but, there is still at least 1 good thing to come out of today:
We can officially cross off 2 more names from our list of the stolen children successfully rescued from occupied territory (no Russian forces firing their guns at us or the car this time around, either. Though, it was pretty much a ghost town anyway).
