Going to start a thread consisting of things that need improving... 1. Kitchen extractor fans. Noisey and don't work very well. The relief I get whenever I switch it off is the only thing good about it.

By every measure, Opus 4.8 beats human experts as peer reviewers in a study of 124 Harvard social science papers covering a range from statistical analyses to formal models to qualitative work. As academics, we need to figure out how to adapt the practice of science to AI, fast.

100% this 👇. The irony of running academic work through Pangram and getting outraged by a high percentage is that you’re outsourcing your own judgment to AI. Your assessment is itself 100% AI-generated. We should use our own brains both to produce academic work (with AI assistance or not, your call) and to assess it. If you need Pangram to tell you that something is AI slop, that tells you everything you need to know about where we’re heading.
I keep seeing people run all sorts of documents through Pangram and get outraged when they come back as AI-positive. I feel like I’m starting to lose sight of what we’re trying to achieve here. Is the outrage always warranted? 1/

I would be interested to know how much of this is all downstream from long/bad commutes.
My strongest “vibes not evidence” belief is that remote work is a cancer that’s making (most) people miserable even though it seems better in the short term.

🚨 New paper on AI and Copyright 🚨 It's easy to dismiss AI-written books 📚 as slop nobody buys. So, armed with full-text AI detection from @pangram, we studied self-published genre fiction books sold on Amazon from 2023 to 2026 March Turns out Amazon is flooded with books with substantial AI text and these books are earning significant 💰💸 and most importantly, crowding out sales of non-AI books. FWIW, a book doesn't need to be high quality to have a market impact. It just has to exist in the thousands, which Generative AI enables. Joint w/ @dhillon_p (@UMich), @irisiris_l (@stonybrooku ) & Jane Ginsburg (@ColumbiaLaw) (1/n) 🧵

What should an open scientific paper look like in the AI age? We made a demonstration project out of our paper on the childhood socioeconomic circumstances of the Nobel Laureates. Please check it out and share. Details in 🧵 1/

I am somewhat reluctant with the whole rejoin EU thing. I do think there has been negative economic effects. I also dont think there is any appetite to inact any of the "opportunities" from leaving. But...

The process took a great deal of political time and turned the country against each other and achieved nothing. You also have reform polling high who would probably want to come out again. I dont think it is worth doing unless you can get a a bigger majority backing it (65-70%?)

"If City weren’t there, the team that finished second would have won the league" This isn't the only counterfactual and probably not even the best...

After doing these calculations for the relevant seasons where City won the league changes precisely nothing (lol). The team thet finished 2nd would still win. But...

In 2020/21 Leicester finished 5th and West Ham 6th. Remove the City games and West Ham leapfrog Leicester. So West Ham, not Leicester, would take the vacant Champions League place!
