We need to change the climate on campuses such that students can actually speak freely about a whole host of issues about which they now self-censor

P.S. This doesn’t mean this answer applies using rules at different schools or the first amendment or that it’s the *right* rule. This is just my read under the rules as they currently exist at Penn. (10/10)

Wow - Columbia spends more on teaching than Harvard+Yale+Princeton combined! Or at least that's what they told US News. Great research on a bunch of disparities by Columbia mathematician. math.columbia.edu/~thaddeus/… @JoshFischman

One of the most striking parts is how many transfer students Columbia takes relative to peers. May be driven by 1) fact that their on-average worse outcomes aren't counted by us news and 2) they likely pay a lot more.

Fascinating new paper by @AaronChalfin & Maxim Massenkoff that may resolve the seeming tension between the perception of higher crime but the reality of a big crime drop when the pandemic hit in 2020.
The main narrative about 2020 is that while murder rose, other crime fell. But people stayed inside more, making it hard to infer anything about public safety. In a new paper, Maxim Massenkoff & I study changes in the risk of violence while out in public.👇maximmassenkoff.com/papers/v…

Has anyone discovered a platform for online socializing like gather.town that is sufficiently better than zoom to justify using it? @jenniferdoleac
