Let me test stuff!
It’s time to give that an end… announcing RinCast, a free* and open source alternative to Virtual Desktop
RinCast has all of the basic stuff that Virtual Desktop offers. Desktop Streaming, VR Streaming, and it even works better in a few network setups. RinCast is fully free to use on your local network or over Tailscale, and with the RinCast account*, you can even use it across the internet. The app, streamer and backend for the RinCast accounts are fully open source under MIT license too, so you own everything of your stack. Need a better performance overlay? Just build one. Need support for another headset? Go ahead, no one can stop you.
It will be in early access soon. You can join the discord in my Bio for updates, and I’ll try to post some on here too, but not as regularly
*RinCast is fully free to use on LAN and over Tailscale, and it will be free to use with RinCast accounts in the beginning. However, if I can’t handle the server cost, I may have to charge a very little fee in the future to only use that one feature. Everything will always stay free!
The screenshot with the performance was shot on a non-LAN connection and does not represent true latency on a LAN setup, more info on that also soon

This is made worse by the developer's response, old clients don't work with newer streamers, and their initial refusal to provide old versions. The software failing validation causing the whole thing to break when you've possibly paid for it is awful, and why people are upset
Replying to @newbiehkhk @dayytrack
It was the free streamer that automatically updated which desyncs the paid apk version and prevents connection arbitrarily. Folks asked for the previous version of the free streamer (accepting no support), and got told to fuck off.
Bruh….
They rooted it so that Meta can’t see the device. If meta servers can’t be used on the device, then they can’t update the client app on the headset because you don’t offer an APK download of it.
If it was fake outrage, why would they go to a support discord to to ask?
Since this has received some comments, let me address the major i see between all of you.
Thread below.
He did it in such a rude way, that is what the customer was complaining about, as they also don’t want to risk the bricking of their hardware just to fucking update one app.
If they offered official APK downloads, then I think this would have been not as big as it is.
what if i make a better alternative?
Just saying as a Virtual Desktop user, this doesn’t look good on their PR
