Another standout conversation from the Breaking Bread Tour: I sat down with Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin. It reinforced something I'd already seen along the way: progress starts with people willing to sit down and listen to one another.
Nursing asks you to show up for people no matter who they are, what they believe, or where they come from. I'm grateful for young people like Kierney Murphy, part of a group of nursing students at @OhioState, who are about to carry that lesson into the world. nursing.osu.edu/news/2026/09…
Breaking Bread Together is about showing up in the neighborhoods where people live and work. On a tour of @clemidline, Cleveland's business district and greenway, Brad Whitehead showed me the investment areas set to bring real job development to local residents.
Saddened to hear of the passing of Alex Sanders. He was a true Southern gentleman and one of the great storytellers South Carolina has ever known. Alex could hold a room like no one else. Praying for his family. Rest well, my friend.

With so much division and shouting in this country right now, I wanted to have a different kind of conversation — one about listening instead of arguing. I sat down with @DougPetcash of @10TV for Face the State. Grateful for the chance to talk about what it actually takes to move forward together by breaking bread.
Congratulations to @16thStBaptist in Birmingham on their new Education and Visitor Center! A few weeks ahead of their grand opening on September 15th, I got a walk-through of the new facility and learned about the incredible educational work they're doing.

In the forefront is a wooden pulpit with an open book and covered with a green cloth adorned with crosses. The phrase "This Do In Remembrance Of Me" is inscribed on the front of the table. The floor is carpeted in red.
Thank you to @OhioState for welcoming me with open arms to speak with students about my experiences. The questions and conversations were thoughtful, and they gave me real hope for the future. @TheLantern

Former Republican Gov. of South Carolina David Beasley, who has supported Trump in the past, says the president is “tearing this country apart” with divisive rhetoric: “The lack of civility in this nation is going down by the minute, and I don’t think people in America can take it much more.”
A few weeks ago, our Breaking Bread Tour started at the place where a shared meal really begins — on a farm. Thank you, Jones Valley Teaching Farm, for showing us how to use food as the starting point for young people to grow into leaders and build a healthier future for our communities.
Still on the move, our Breaking Bread Together tour brought us to Harlem. Thank you to our hosts for welcoming us and sending me home with this hat. In the city's hustle, we slowed down to talk, listen, and learn from our neighbors; that's what Breaking Bread Together is about.
This is abhorrent. Elections don’t have to be about cruelty and lies. South Carolina deserves better. I urge voters to look at the merits of each candidate and cast their vote accordingly. We must reject politics based on division and hate. While South Carolinians can strongly disagree with one another, we can do so civilly and with honest intentions for the betterment of our communities and well being of our families.

Always great to catch up with a fellow South Carolinian. It was so inspiring chatting with former Governor David Beasley about his mission to feed the poor and bring people together.
Some of the best conversations I've ever had happened over a shared meal. That's where real connection starts. What's your go-to way of connecting with the people who live right next door?
Breaking Bread is rooted in this core belief. It starts with the acknowledgment that we are all made in the image of God.
Unity is not about agreeing on everything. It is about finding common ground, showing mutual respect, and moving forward despite our differences.
Political differences should never prevent us from slowing down, listening, learning, and breaking bread with our neighbors so we can move forward together to make real progress.
One thing most Americans can agree on, the holidays bring us together! That’s why I just had to stop by the site where they filmed A Christmas Story when I was in Cleveland.
