The 1880s were a tumultuous time in the labor movement. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the United States experienced almost ten thousand strikes and lockouts during that decade.
As workers fought and won battles against low wages, long hours, and harsh working conditions, people gained more time to engage in beneficial activities…and according to @ashp_cml, this helped pave the way for the roller skating craze of the mid-1880s.
This Labor Day we’re thankful to those who advocated for worker’s rights in the past and who continue to defend them today, enabling people to participate in the recreational activities, avocations, and hobbies that make their lives full. #InDerbyWeTrust® #dcrollerderby
