100% correct diagnosis and prescription. And it’s not just in Spain.

software engineering today's dilemma: "is less about knowledge and is more about understanding what you ship and ownership" they say. but ownership and understanding, for how long? is my question. we have consistently delegated understanding for practicity while shifting our capacity to less understood scienses. most of us are not dependant today on knowing how to handle wood for furniture (and so many examples of abundance). we forget every day that everything we do as a species is moving faster than yesterday at an exponential rate. we not only fail to understand how that works, but also to introduce the question of 'when' on every fact we think we know now. even if today the role of a software engineer seems to be more of a tech lead coordinating agents, yet having to understand and own the abstractions or implementations yo ship, this too will soon be gone. even though we are at an ownership / understanding crisis, we will soon delegate more to AI. yes, even ownership, we are already doing it - and it will be even more so - exponentially. we will also for some time still be the creators of AI. that too will be gone. optimistically, we will refactor society backwards and fix all the bugs. after that, who knows?

Dario's essay points towards the right path forward. The details need working through, but the direction is correct for meeting this critical moment. This is also why we recently put out our proposal for an industry-wide standards body for frontier AI. xitter.cf/demishassabis/status/2…
We Must Pace the Frontier: I’ve written a new essay on why the AI industry should slow down, with a three-part plan for doing so. Anthropic is unilaterally committing to the first of these steps. We’ll provide third-party evaluators with permanent, employee-level access to our systems, so that they can verify adherence to our safety measures, report on incidents, and assess models’ alignment during training.
