In the land of Shakespeare, drama isn’t even a subject in its own right. Ridiculous. It has the lowly status of pedagogical tool or a ‘module’ within English.
“The full national curriculum is expected to be published later this year. Powell said it would include adding drama as “a distinct module [in English] in key stage 3 for the first time” ‘a module ffs’ thetimes.com/uk/education/ar…

I am increasingly worried that our government are about to undo the remarkable progress we've made in England's education system in recent years. Listening to @daisychristo advocate for a knowledge-rich education and explicit teaching gives me hope that not everything is lost.
Ok I hope this will be the most useful conversation you hear about Education this year. This week’s episode of The Amol Rajan Connection (ARC) with @daisychristo of No More Marking has really struck a chord. Anyone with kids; or who works in schools, colleges and universities; or who is interested in the very nature of learning and how the mind works; or what technology is doing to us, will enjoy this. That’s not my view alone; it’s the revealed view of the comments flooding in. We discuss: + working memory vs long-term memory + the risk of creating a Stupidogenic Society + why Knowledge is Freedom + schools for the rich and skills for the poor + how to optimise vocational education + the implications of AI for education + what children should learn + technology and the classroom + Labour’s education policy Something for your weekend perhaps. We’d be honoured if you’d others listening to this episode. Thanks so much for your time - and to Daisy, for a very special contribution to the ARC Universe. Such a clear debunking of mad myths which seem to have flooded society and especially the adult professional education space in England. Anyone involved in any education at any level, anywhere in the world, including professional learning and development, needs to listen to this episode!

Can you teach hard work? One of the biggest levers we have is the way we set homework. How many of these levers do you pull to increase completion & likelihood of pupils working hard? (*Thread* based on latest episode of #OperationEducation) 🧵👇🏼 1/

A must-read. Evaluating education policy rigorously requires a) deep knowledge of the arguments, history & evidence & b) an awareness of what proponents & opponents of a policy value. @daisychristo demonstrates this in ways that our politicians would do well to learn from.

Is calling Kemi Badenoch a “Nigerian scammer” with whom you shouldn’t share bank details racist? I asked Robert Jenrick. Our exchange from yday’s Sunday show.
‘Is calling Kemi Badenoch a “Nigerian scammer” racist, yes or no?’ ‘…I’m not on your show to talk about what a journalist has tweeted.’ Reform's Robert Jenrick refuses to engage with @Lewis_Goodall's question about Raheem Kassam's comments on the Tory leader.

Actors use scripts. Musicians use sheet music. Surgeons follow established procedures. Why are scripts for teachers treated as an affront to professionalism? @ehanford explains why Direct Instruction uses them.

I would like to make a £500 bet to charity with @LucyMPowell that A. if you introduce technical GCSEs in 2029, then B. by 2034 the number of students on free school meals taking history, geography and languages will have dropped by 10% or more. Every single line of this reads as a red flag. I profoundly hope that it doesn't come to fruition, and we respect the Francis review and don't make unevidenced and counterproductive changes. thetimes.com/article/281f80d…

Our first single release was well received, plus we did a tour supporting Echo & the Bunnymen to promote it. Extraordinary times. Pete de Freitas drumming and Rolo McGinty’s bass playing elevated the sound.

One of the biggest mistakes in math education has been the move away from practice and memorization. We're told memorization works against understanding. It's usually the opposite. The more foundational knowledge students can retrieve automatically, the more working memory they have available to think about complex mathematics.

PISA results show—controlling for social class and compositional effects—achievement in UK state and private schools was the same, suggesting that the quality of teaching in private schools is such that they need classes of 23 to achieve what state schools do with classes of 30

PISA update I have updated a couple of charts I made last year when I started exploring the success of English schools. The latest update shows that England has sustained it's position, while the home nations, Finland, and the OECD average have all continued to fall.

New PISA data out England is now top ten in all three areas (reading, maths, science) and the second highest performing country outside of east Asia (after Estonia). This is a huge public policy success.
