Woman of the Year is Gisèle Pelicot of France. This courageous woman waived her right to anonymity and insisted on her rapists being tried in open court for all the world to see, in solidarity with every woman who has ever suffered at the hands of men. She gave her evidence, the most heartrending testimony, in defiance and in the hope that by doing so, she might spare other women from similar ordeals. Gisèle spoke for angry women everywhere. At every stage, she had the support of her daughter, Caroline Darian, herself a victim. Strong women raise strong daughters. “Today, I’m taking back control of my life. Many women don’t have the proof. I have the proof…I want all women who have been raped to say: Madame Pelicot did it, I can too. I don't want them to be ashamed any longer.” “Since the beginning of this trial, I've heard a lot of things that I were hard to hear, and I've become aware of that. I knew what I was exposing myself to by not going agreeing for the trial to be behind closed doors." "For me it's the trial of cowardice, there are no other words. I also saw four people from the gendarmerie come to say that a gentleman here was respectful. That is respect?…They all raped an unconscious woman unable to give her consent." Gisèle Pelicot has shown such dignity, humanity and courage throughout. May she and her daughter one day find peace and comfort in the knowledge that they are heroes to so many of us. Gisèle, les femmes te remercient.
