A Philadelphia public school set aside a room for one religion — and punished non-Muslim students who walked in. An important ruling for Jewish students and their families in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.  A federal judge has denied, in substantial part, a motion to dismiss filed by three School District of Philadelphia officials, sustaining our clients’ claims surrounding the School District’s establishment of a school room “designated for one religion” – Islam – and punishing non-Muslim students for entering. The Court agreed with our claim that this arrangement violates the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause. The Court also approved of our Due Process claims arising out of punishments school officials imposed, when school records showed our clients were innocent, and when the school ignored basic procedural protections.   Making new law in the District, the court also held that the school officials were not entitled to qualified immunity.    The plaintiffs are represented pro bono by The Deborah Project, which litigates to protect the civil rights of Jewish students in America's K-12 schools and in colleges and universities. dailywire.com/news/jewish-st…

On October 6, Haverford College Assistant Professor of Religion Guangtian Ha was arrested by the FBI and charged with online harassment and intimidation of a Jewish colleague. Ha's public social media posts appeared in The Deborah Project's lawsuit against Haverford College on behalf of Jewish students at Haverford. Those posts were hostile and threatening to "Zionists" at Haverford. But over the course of the past year, Ha sent more than 50 far more explicitly threatening, hate-filled anonymous messages to a Jewish colleague; those messages were the subject of the indictment. In them, Ha railed against and wished for the death of Jews—not just Zionists, and not only at Haverford. He promised another Holocaust, hoped that Jews would be exterminated, and yearned for the October 7, 2023, rape and massacre of Jews, to "happen all day, every day." Here's TDP's legal director, Lori Lowenthal Marcus, talking about this example of "when people say they hate Zionists, they mean they hate Jews. foxnews.com/video/6406790119…

They're protesting a settlement they haven't read. Last week, 340 alumni and students signed a letter claiming TDP's Haverford College settlement shuts down criticism of Israel and creates a new "protected class," i.e. Zionists. They are wrong on both counts. That's what happens when you shriek before reading. In fact, if they had read the publicly available information about the settlement they'd know: there are no new protected classes, and no ban on criticizing Israel or Zionism. What did change? Jewish and Israeli student aren't allowed to be harassed, and their events will now get the same security as everyone else's. There's now an antisemitism committee and annual antisemitism training. And the college president publicly proclaimed that Jewish, Israeli, and Zionist students are welcome and belong on campus. That's not silencing anyone. That's equal treatment. Do you want to know what isn't equal treatment? As TDP Legal Director Lori Lowenthal Marcus said, the author and signers of the letter who accused us of "weaponizing antisemitism" are evoking the "rank racism of the pre-Civil Rights era when racists demanded the law not be used to shield Black Americans from harassment and other harms.” It is the letter writers who are demanding unequal treatment for Jews, which even Haverford had to rectify. inquirer.com/education/haver…

Two significant California results for The Deborah Project this year. A Ninth Circuit panel revived Concerned Jewish Parents and Teachers of Los Angeles v. Liberated Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum Consortium. The court reversed the dismissal of our clients' case, vacated roughly $600,000 in attorneys' fees awarded against them, and cleared the way for an amended complaint. We will be refiling. In May, we reached a settlement with Sequoia Union High School District on behalf of Jewish families at Woodside and Atherton high schools. The settlement's terms include impartial teaching on the Israel-Palestine conflict under the district's Controversial Issue policy, a neutral decision-maker to review classroom materials, and mandatory antisemitism training. Jewish students, parents, and teachers are entitled to the same protection from discrimination as every other community in California's public schools. We are grateful to the families who stood firm through years of litigation. These achievements reflect why The Deborah Project is steadfastly committed to pursuing meaningful protections for Jewish students in public schools. edsource.org/2026/appeals-co…

The trial court shut the door on Jewish families. The Ninth Circuit just reopened it. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit reversed the trial court’s dismissal with prejudice of our case challenging antisemitic “liberated” ethnic studies materials in LAUSD classrooms. This was the nation’s first lawsuit challenging these materials, which teach students that Jews are not indigenous to the Middle East and that Israel was founded through “genocide” and “apartheid." The court held that our clients must be allowed to amend their complaint, and it recognized that Jewish families can establish injury by showing their children suffered an independent act of antisemitism causally linked to the curriculum’s use in the district of their school. The court also reversed the lower court’s imposition of fees. Legal Director Lori Lowenthal Marcus: “The trial judge ruled completely against us. The Ninth Circuit undid his ruling on every point, meaning jews must be permitted to seek protection from malevolent curricular malpractice.” Concerned Jewish Parents and Teachers of Los Angeles v. Liberated Ethnic Studies Curriculum Consortium, No. 24-7676 (9th Cir. Sept. 4, 2026). jns.org/news/u-s-news/appeal…

Parents deserve to know their rights and how to use them. In this interview, Lori Lowenthal Marcus, legal director at The Deborah Project, discusses the legal limits on public K–12 teachers’ classroom speech and why parents should be informed when political or personal viewpoints enter the classroom. Knowing the law gives families the tools to speak up, ask questions, and hold public schools accountable. This is the kind of work The Deborah Project does every day: educating families, protecting students, and using the law to defend their rights. Link to article: jns.org/jns-tv/think-twice/t…

Haverford Admits Its Antisemitism Problem The college settles a lawsuit by Jewish students amid ugly facts. By The Editorial Board Aug. 9, 2026 5:21 pm ET Universities that typically hunt for discrimination under every stone couldn’t muster the will to defend Jewish students after the Hamas massacre of Oct. 7, 2023. Protesters were allowed to break rules to bully Jews who declined to vilify Israel. Take Haverford, which on Friday announced a settlement to a lawsuit by Jewish students. The Philadelphia-area college said for the first time that discrimination against “Zionists,” or against Jews on the basis of their commitment to Israel’s existence, is a civil-rights violation that will incur discipline if proved. After fighting the Jewish students for more than two years, Haverford now corrects its appalling honor code and sets out new policies for disruptive and masked protesters. The college also admits a “failure on our part” since Oct. 7 and commits to “doing better.” For several years Haverford told Jewish students to take their problems to the anti-Israel student activists staffing the Honor Council. The council administered an honor code that subordinated the speech rights of what it called the “privileged” to the sentiments of the “marginalized.” If in conflict, it said, the privileged can’t expect to be treated with “respect.” Guess where the activists placed Jews in this schema? In the days after the Oct. 7 massacre, Haverford activists shared graphics of Hamas paragliders with the text: “Stand with Palestinian resistance.” Prof. Tarik Aougab called for “unequivocal and firm support for the Palestinian resistance” and reposted a social-media message celebrating the attack. Haverford gave him an award for embodying the college’s values. Activists were allowed to aggressively disrupt an event on antisemitism and occupy parts of Haverford’s campus, forcing Jewish students to run a gantlet to get to the library or dining hall. Posters for Jewish events were torn down. Haverford blamed the wind. Students conspired to block Zionists from leading campus tours and frequently called for all Zionists to be excluded from campus. A Jewish basketball player was pressured by administrators into dropping a long-approved “antisemitism awareness” designation for a home game lest that provoke students to disrupt the game and cause her team to forfeit. When Philadelphia Jewish leaders raised the hostile environment with Haverford, they say they were told to get used to it. In the past blacks and gays didn’t feel safe on campus to express their views, and now it is the Jews’ turn, Haverford’s diversity chief explained. Per the leaders in the room, the DEI chief said Jewish students need to disavow “genocide” and “stop filing complaints about antisemitism.” That attitude didn’t change easily. It helped that Haverford President Wendy Raymond was embarrassed at a Congressional hearing that exposed the facts of the case. But the Jewish students had to persist. Represented pro bono by the Deborah Project, which defends Jews who are under assault in education, they could afford to keep fighting. Ms. Raymond’s contract won’t be renewed, Haverford announced early in her term. The DEI chief resigned, and the college now adopts a definition of antisemitism that includes some forms of anti-Israel extremism. Discriminatory conduct will no longer pass muster because the perpetrators say they’re targeting “not Jews, only Zionists.” It’s a shame it took a lawsuit for Haverford to admit its antisemitism problem. wsj.com/opinion/haverford-ad… Appeared in the August 10, 2026, print edition as 'Haverford Admits Its Antisemitism Problem'.

On behalf of Jewish families we filed a lawsuit against a Bay Area school district for pervasive antisemitism by teachers, students, and administrators. It's past time to challenge antisemitism in education. SUHSD is the district.

In Nov. 2023, a Berkeley parent raised concerns after a teacher said he’d discuss “Israel-Palestine” and “settler colonialism.” The Deborah Project has now sued Berkeley School District for allegedly fostering anti-Israel bias and failing to provide balanced content. #civilrights
