NEW: Mamdani's messy, confounding, rushed rollout of his inaugural Pied-à-Terre Tax begs the question: is he working towards 100% compliance? Or is he more intent on exposing and punishing New York homeowners with a process that few, if any, understand? My latest: city-journal.org/article/pie…

This level of preventable subway murder wasn't normal ... but it is becoming normal. (And this guy is still on the loose!)

Rosen’s new article on Canal Street counterfeits absolutely rules! It’s a fun read, packed with mind-blowing statistics and colorful commentary.
NEW: The counterfeit bazaar overwhelming Canal Street has flourished despite repeated NYPD crackdowns. In 2025, more than 92% of the 908 counterfeit arrests made in that area were booked as felonies. All but two were arraigned as misdemeanors. How lax prosecution, inconsistent policing, CCRB complaints against cops, and a felony threshold that seemingly no one can prove has only empowered counterfeit vendors.

Important scoop with major implications for the FBI and DOJ from the talented @courtneybuble:

Mamdani was not a DSA candidate and he is not a DSA mayor. Mamdani was a Mamdani candidate and is a Mamdani mayor. The poor DSA is gradually figuring that out, but it won't matter. They need him; he doesn't need them ... nobody to his left will win a primary. Any challenger will just remind us why we don't elect non-charismatic non-Mamdani leftists as mayor.

NYC’s Canal Street operates in plain sight. The vendors sell fake Louis Vuitton bags, Rolex watches, Gucci wallets, and Prada sunglasses across blankets and folding tables.
How are these people able to brazenly operate an open-air counterfeit market?
Police do arrest them. But thanks to civilian complaints against cops, a felony threshold nobody can prove, and lax prosecutions, the market hasn’t missed a day of business.

Again, Mamdani is succeeding as mayor in large part because he hasn’t done what he promised in the campaign, or, in the case of taxes and buses, can’t do it.
“New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani promised a new way of policing on the campaign trail. Nine months into his term, some of his allies on the left are growing frustrated with just how little has changed.” — Via @joeanuta

Two of the challenges of trying to hold Mamdani accountable as mayor are 1) his most unhinged critics focus on the easy and often wrong stuff -- "Mamdani smiled on 9/11!!!" -- and thus create a plausible alibi for him on the hard and often correct stuff, and 2) a lot of people and institutions who could serve as reasonable checks and balances on him have sacrificed their own credibility to factional special interests (see Park, Central).

A whopping 14 panels of witnesses are set to testify at the City Council’s AI hearing today.
Here’s a look at who that includes, starting off with the security experts/whistleblowers.
Hearing’s just about to kick off now.
NEW: Mayor Zohran Mamdani will be honored next Monday alongside the National Iranian American Council, an organization long suspected of being the unofficial lobbying arm of the Iranian government. The honor comes just three months after the revelation of a planned meeting between a City Hall official and Iran’s ambassador to the UN, raising uncomfortable questions about the mayor’s broader social and professional circles, @adamlehodey and I report.

New: In a setback for Mayor Mamdani, justice in the OG lawsuit against the pied-à-terre tax has ruled the notices for the taxes were "arbitrarily and capricious" and are to be cancelled.
The judge also orders the massive supplemental property tax roll online must be taken down.
