Really interesting revisting the original Mass Effect, an early Xbox title. Designs and visuals still hold up, but it's much easier to tell how far they had to push trimsheets - but the DOF really does a good job in hiding the repetition.

and of course, the newer photo mode lets you really inspect the POM stairs. Pretty effective in gameplay camera view

Been spending some time making textures the old fashioned way to bring into Godot / Unity for some new projects. Been fairly disappointed with the texture work in a lot of smaller projects online. Feels like it's a lost art nowadays.

I find it interesting that the response for some, hearing about their visual scripting system eventually being deprecated for a high level proprietary scripting language, is to switch to another engine that has its own non visual proprietary scripting language.

This was one of the coolest things I saw at GDC this year. The author @dan5sch just wrote a blog post on the project. Basically turning low-poly meshes into detailed voxel objects on the fly. The visual appearance is truly unique and extremely consistent. blog.danielschroeder.me/2024…

Little preview of what's to come in the new "Making a Fluid Solver in Niagara" training series. Heterogeneous Volumes have come a long way since I started toying with them in 5.1 Great job, Epic Devs! The indirect lighting implementation is great! #ue5 #realtimeVFX #gamedev

Been really enjoying learning and using Pandas / Matplotlib for data visualization these past few weeks. I wish I had more practical uses for it in my day2day work though.

Scrubbing through Rebel Moon, it seems like a lot of the scenes had some barrel distortion filter / blur on the sides. Felt very distracting when I was watching it

Sad to read that CGSociety is shutting down in January. It was a valuable source of information and discussion around 3D art that simply did not exist at the time old.reddit.com/r/vfx/comment…
