45 games away at Arsenal, United, Chelsea and Liverpool for Moyes as Everton manager. 0 wins, 27 losses, 31 scored and 83 conceded. This myth that he’s a good manager needs to end.

What an extraordinary historical own goal. Yes, Ireland played Nazi Germany. So did numerous European countries before the Second World War. And yes, the Irish team gave the Nazi salute in Bremen in 1939, an episode that looks appalling today and shouldn’t be whitewashed. But here’s the part you conveniently forgot. In 1936 it was the German team giving the Nazi salute at Dalymount Park, not the Irish team. Ireland then beat them 5–2. And one of the Irishmen who gave that salute in Germany in 1939 was Johnny Carey. Do you know what he subsequently did? He joined the British Army and fought against Nazi Germany. Nor was Ireland unique in this respect. England and other national teams also gave the Nazi salute or performed similar gestures at matches and official occasions in the 1930s, when sporting exchanges with Nazi Germany were still taking place. That context does not excuse the gesture, but it does make it absurd to present Ireland’s 1939 match as uniquely revealing of some supposed national sympathy for Nazism. So dragging up an 87-year-old football match to smear today’s Irish players is not the devastating historical argument you apparently think it is. More importantly, there’s a breathtaking irony in invoking the Nazis to silence criticism of the actions of a modern government. The lesson of the 1930s isn’t that governments should be immune from criticism because of their national or religious identity. It’s precisely the opposite, states, governments and armies must be judged by what they actually do. Ireland’s players lowering their heads harms nobody. You can dislike it. You can call it disrespectful. But reaching back to 1939 because you can’t cope with Irish footballers expressing disapproval of Israel’s conduct in 2026 isn’t an argument. It’s a diversion. And if your best defence of what Israel is doing today is “but look what some Irish footballers did before the Second World War”, you’ve rather spectacularly conceded the present-day argument. Disgraceful

Israel FA Head of Communications Shlomi Barzel speaking to Globes last September: “I’m surprised we’re still part of international tournaments. In many ways, it’s a miracle. “You can explain the miracle through the actions we have taken and through a great deal of tolerance from FIFA and UEFA but, historically countries have been suspended for much less. “If there had been a free vote, we wouldn’t have survived it.” And this was him writing in Haaretz October 2007, during the controversy over German-Iranian player Ashkan Dejagah refusing to play against Israel: “Sports and politics have always gone hand-in-hand.” He cited Yugoslavia and South Africa as examples of countries excluded from international sport until they “changed their ways.” A far cry from his statement yesterday: “What pleases us today, is that football has won. The separation between football and politics must be maintained.”

There's going to be a lot of 'keep politics out of football' comments this weekend. Meanwhile players in England will be wearing poppies next month and scrutinised if they don't, after a World Cup where the US President stood with the winners on the podium. The horse has bolted.

What this shows is that the real power doesn't sit with CEOs, Presidents of Associations or Robert Krafts. It sits with Gavin Bazunu's, Arron Rowe's and Liam Og's. It sits with people who walk onto stages, football pitches and into factories and onto the streets. Solidarity 🇵🇸

My 2 cents on the Macklemore cancelling ... going after Ed Sheeran draws massive attention away from the real culprit here i.e. the pro-Israel billionaire, Robert Kraft. It is Kraft that cancelled Macklemore. The focus should be on Kraft and the use of his power to silence voices who are critical of the slaughter and ethnic cleansing that Israel is carrying out in Gaza. When it's Sheeran drawing the headlines, Kraft is winning.
