The danger of developing any admiration for columnists is that, generally, when they turn out to have a bigotry around people like you it feels quite personal. It shouldn't, of course: Guardian writers hate trans people, grass is green.

Emanuele Biggi's photograph 'Gladiator Crab' shows one of the resident freshwater crabs that live beneath Trajan's Forum in Rome. The river crabs choose not to inhabit the Tiber, but the ancient channels of the Cloaca Maxima Roman sewer system. Since their discovery in 1998, these Roman sewer crabs have perplexed scientists - growing slower, living longer, and reaching one and a half times the size of other crabs of the same species. They also mate at a different time of year to other river crabs. One theory suggests that since moving into the isolated habitat of the Roman sewer 2,000 years ago, the crabs have undergone an accelerated form of evolution, essentially diverging into a new sub-species.

Two point test: Is it a compliment about something she has control over, like choosing a cool jacket? Is it a compliment you’d still give her if she were, say, 60? There you go

Amid all the kerfuffle about Roald Dahl, spare a thought for science fiction Grandmaster Jack Vance, whose 1969 novel had to be retitled to "The Wannek" (and all mentions of the titular alien race in four books) after the original title made British readers spit their tea out.

It has nothing to do with professional screenplays, though. And its specific meaning has been twisted into a blanket put down of all female characters.

The term “Mary Sue” has a specific meaning as an authorial analog inserted into fanfic who is smarter than the regular characters. I know it exists because when I wrote fanfic as a teen there was often a spunky young teen girl character who was better at everything in the story.
