I disagree please. nobody is firing an engineering manager or head of engineering because of lean teams. the junior, mid level and even seniors would go for that lean team to happen

exactly! that’s why I find the whole “upskill” and “learn how to use ai”, because software engineers are by far one of the best if not the best adopters of modern tools and if they can’t get laid off despite that, then that advice is bull crap.

“you are speaking from privilege because you are already in the upper management “ that’s the premise I used to call you privilege, don’t get it the wrong way. again it’s easier to use opus 5.5 to get rid of a mid level engineer compared to an engineering management.
I don’t know what privilege you are talking about when I still don’t sleep before 2am. I am also working as hard as I can because the bar is higher everyday. Software engineering is a very competitive field due to how fast things change. 6 years ago, learning HTML, CSS and little bit of JavaScript was enough to get your first role, but things have changed. Not necessarily because of ‘saturation’, but because we now build more complex applications. The domains are now more mature. Even engineering processes have evolved. Generally, the difficulty level has significantly increased. This means learning HTML, CSS and JavaScript is no longer enough to get an entry level job. You also need to understand payments, e-commerce and whatever domains you’re interested in. Because the problems we solve now are more complex, you’re also required to understand how to translate designs or even design systems. With or without AI, the people who refused to evolve and did not push themselves towards the new realities will struggle to find a job or switch jobs. AI only makes it more obvious. This has absolutely nothing to do with privilege. Maybe you think I have 10 years experience 😂 Under normal circumstances, I am not supposed to be where I am now.

ben please naw, you and I know the spike in AI productivity is the reason. these companies aren’t laying off simply because of economic issues.

aren’t you in upper management? yes or no? I said privilege because you are in upper management, I didn’t say you didn’t work hard or work to your position.

you cannot tell me the 60k people microsoft is about to layoff don’t know how to use ai to work. they do with probably unlimited tokens.

maybe replace is not the right word but you will be let go because your exact role has been made redundant by the usage of AI. AI can’t replace a ceo or engineering manager so by the virtue of that, most of them come on here to tell us this. let’s wake up to the new reality.

I understand you but then again you are speaking from privilege because you are already in the upper management and by that metrics AI simply can’t replace you. let’s not lie to ourselves please, if you are junior or mid level, you will go home because AI is better than you.
AI is just a tool. I just finished a demo of a feature to a PM and senior EM. I built a POC that demonstrates how we could use AI to solve a major user pain point. I have done two engineering org-wide AI enablement workshops where I showed advanced use cases of AI especially with automating support and on call rotations. My career prospects have never been this good. The people who worry about AI replacing them were not really engineers. They just had a job that involved writing code. Anyone telling you large companies are laying off engineers BECAUSE AI is now writing all the code is either ignorant or telling a convenient lie to hide why large companies do layoffs shortly before or after publishing their quarterly financial statements. There are open positions in almost every large company you know. As someone who has been on both sides of the table in technical interviews, I can tell you that it is more difficult to find suitable talent right now and the bar is also higher right now.

Gets easier to see when privilege speaks on here about recent situations in tech / design. Usually in that bashful, condescending tone. Not surprising to me, you almost can tell these guys haven't interacted with designers or juniors outside their circles in months. They have no idea how worse things have gotten / (will get). They assume "getting with the program" is enough nowadays. An extra skill, an extra update. Truth is, doesn't actually matter anymore. Where privilege and resources speak, reason often go unoticed. I am inclined to just quietly enjoy my current artsy disposition and build a community of like-minded craftsmen but once in a while, I realise how important it is to call echo reality. On the flip side, it does seem people are addicted to the pandemonium.

“ai won’t take your job, the person using ai will” — this is pure cope. I really pity you if you fall for it.
