As I may have mentioned, my book comes out tomorrow(!)
It’s called The Missing Course: Everything They Never Taught You About College Teaching.
It’s for college teachers, from graduate instructors on up to the most experienced full professors.
I hope you’ll read it.

Frustrated by this IHE opinion piece, shared by the excellent @joshua_r_eyler. As a neurodivergent, former first generation HE student, in my opinion it's rife with hurtful judgments & assumptions about learner engagement and motivation. I have thoughts: insidehighered.com/advice/20…

Thoughts on Twitter, Musk, and the destruction of the virtual public square.
The end may be near. No amount of snark or schadenfreude will change the fact that this situation is a disaster. Twitter has always been a mess – but also a crucial instrument to democratize America.

This is so good, if only because it provides an excuse to spend 15 minutes thinking about how great Talking Book is.

Pre-coffee hot take: people love to pile on Liz Truss for her unalloyed Thatcherism because it allows them to pretend that Thatcherism didn't become the very air that we breathe.
I don't know if there are any readers of Didaktikos among my followers, but I thought I should correct the record here: this is not an accurate representation of what I've written, nor of the research on active learning.

If I did make such a claim, I would be contradicting years and years of studies that show that active learning strategies are far better for learning—and for narrowing achievement gaps—than lecture alone.

I was recently on a flight to Charlotte, and when the flight landed two women, one Black one white, got into an argument after bumping into one another in the aisle. When they got off the plane, the white woman turned to the Black woman, red with anger, and called her the n-word.
I spent much of the weekend listening to the new Alvvays, relieved with the knowledge that it definitely wasn't bad, but not exactly sure how good it was. I put it on tonight and whoo boy did it hit me. I think I love every single song?
Candidates should bring a commitment to serving the institution right down the line, have 2-3 years experience carrying out dirty work, and should, generally, take it to the limit. Preference will be given to candidates who shower the people they love with love.

Another way of putting this: I know that life isn't always easy for tenured/TT folks
But here's the thing. Everything that is challenging about a tenured/TT job, other academics - likely at the same institution - are doing for less pay and security +

I don't understand how you can write an article about privacy-invading proctoring software without mentioning the companies that hoodwinked universities like Cleveland State into thinking they were a good way to ensure "academic integrity."
A federal judge said it was unconstitutional for a university in Ohio to virtually scan the bedroom of a student before he took a remote test, a decision that could affect how schools use remote-monitoring software popularized during the Covid-19 pandemic. nyti.ms/3Kk90fh
