One of my favorite examples of how a change of a single atom can cause havoc: Vancomycin, often the "antibiotic of last resort", loses efficacy by 1000-fold when a single N atom is mutated to an O by the bacterium (causing repulsion instead of a hydrogen bond).

YES. LncRNAs. ❤️
💥Cheeky 'little' update from @GencodeGenes v47, almost doubling the number of #lncRNA genes & ~4x more lncRNA transcripts. This was highlighted by @1QINGWANG when observing the greater quality of our reference-guided de novo TxOme assemblies from deep direct RNA sequencing data

Landfall tomorrow. We're in the neighboring county, but it's forecast to be bad everywhere around Tampa Bay! #Milton2024 #miltonhurricane
The @NWSNHC forecasts 10-15 feet of storm surge in Pinellas from Wed. to Thurs. That's enough to carry away a car, inundate a house, & kill you. If you are under an evacuation order, get detailed information on where to go & what to do before you leave. #PCMilton

Having driven along these exact roads a few short weeks ago, it is surreal to see this. One of my favorite beers is brewed by Homeplace Beer Company in this very small town. I wonder if it even exists anymore!
"Just wanted to make you aware if you hadn’t heard about the smaller communities regarding hurricane helene. I’m from a little town outside of Asheville NC called Burnsville… Burnsville Spruce Pine Little Switzerland Boone Blowing Rock Bakersville They are devastated. I last heard from my parents in Spruce Pine yesterday at 8:15 as the core of the storm went over them and trees were falling in their house. All cell towers were wiped out, no electricity, no gas, limited food and water and every single road getting up to them is washed out and not drivable The only way to get to them is by air. I’m going to send you some images I’ve gotten from friends who were able to connect to Starlink. It’s absolute the worst devastation the mountains has seen in our lifetimes We are all worried sick and no one can get in to help them. They need FEMA, national guard, Red Cross, urgently!”

I was there just last month! Lovely town. Sad to see it destroyed and made unrecognizable by the hurricane 😧
I made it out of Asheville. The entire area has no cell service, no power, no water, no sewer. I tried several times to make it off campus, but neighborhoods are blocked by power lines, trees, and flood waters. UNC Asheville has not been communicating well with students. #ncwx

Anyone know of any resources to help/rehabilitate injured #wildlife in #Utah?
Our neighbor saw them last night and called. They said they could come shoot the baby. . . Soooo that was not successful. But if anyone knows of any other agency that can help the little family that would be great.

When this few days old elephant calf was rescued from brink of death. To current condition; when he is a healthy four year old. Best thing you will watch today.

Agreed! On that note, celebrating our latest NoA from @NIHAging! Grateful for the funding in this brutal FY 🙏 On the flip side, another proposal went 20->18->13% at NINDS but will not be funded coz the payline dropped to 11% 😩 (from 2017-2023 the payline was >14%! 🫤).
What I don't get about academia is the chronic lack of celebration. It is hard to get & maintain grant funding, hard to get papers accepted without Faustian bargains, hard to be a great mentor, & hard to maximize trainee success. All of it is hard. We should celebrate everything.

Not surprised. When we returned home from our first Australia trip years ago, we went all over town looking for coffee of that caliber but were disappointed with every place we tried. Granted, we were in a small city, but still.
It’s very funny that the Australian Olympic team have bought their own baristas with them
