🇳🇵My heart is broken for Nepal. 🇳🇵 To witness villages erased, families searching for loved ones, and survivors amid the remains of homes built over generations is a grief beyond words. On August 26, a catastrophic collapse of glacier, rock and ice near the Nepal–Tibet border sent a violent torrent through Himalayan river valleys. Entire communities were swept away. Hundreds have lost their lives, many more remain missing, and thousands are displaced or cut off from help. These are not merely numbers. Each number is a person. A mother. A father. A child. A pilgrim. A worker. A friend. Someone loved. Someone expected home. Nepal is breathtaking, and vulnerable to a rapidly warming planet. As glaciers retreat and permafrost thaws, the Himalayas become fragile. Nepal has contributed so little to the climate crisis, yet lives with some of its most devastating consequences. The resilience of the Nepali people is ancient, extraordinary and humbling. But resilience should never become an excuse for indifference. The people of Nepal should not have to prove their strength by repeatedly rebuilding from unimaginable loss. They deserve global attention, humanitarian assistance, climate justice, stronger early-warning systems and resources to protect vulnerable communities. Even amid this heartbreak, I am deeply moved and immensely proud to see Nepal come together, neighbours helping neighbours, volunteers, rescuers, the Nepali Army and many others risking everything to find survivors and reach those cut off. This is resilience made visible: compassion, courage and love in action.
