ALT KEY POINTS • Enterochromaffin (EC) cells release signaling molecules which can activate nearby sensory nerves.Whether this occurs via a conventional synapse formation is unknown. • EC cells rarely make contact with sensory nerves in the upper gut but this frequency increases in the distal colon. • Neurite-like protrusiton on EC cells, named by some as “neuropods” are not a preferntial site of contact with nerve fibres.
I would like to share a major piece of colalborative research I have led, which we have now placed online biorxiv.org/content/10.64898…
This work defines our discovery of the anatomical and physiological pathway through which the mood stabiliser, lithium, acts.

Such a great talk by @FZMarques, alongside the other fantastic Australian #gutbrainaxis researchers @anthonyjhannan @dj_keating @SarahJane_Leigh who are all showing that gut health => brain health! Eat more fibre and look after your #microbiome folks 🍏🧠 #ANS2024

Matt has finally relented and is allowing this proud mom to share, so here is his latest video, describing a day of eating on keto: youtube.com/watch?v=gfUfZ5pp…
Many of you know the story of our son sending severe mental illness into remission after we stumbled upon @ChrisPalmerMD and his brain energy theory of mental disorders. Then we were lucky enough to discover the work of @ShebaniMD @GeorgiaEdeMD @IainCampbellPhD and other metabolic psychiatry visionaries. As a result of using the ketogenic strategies he learned about from these brilliant people, Matt has been free of bipolar cycling for more than 3 1/2 years.
Many of you have followed Matt and co-host @IainCampbellPhD on their youtube channel, BipolarCast, over the years. Many of you have seen Matt interviewed by @bschermd @metabolic_mind and on other health podcasts. Some of you may have caught our segment with Dr. Palmer on the @TODAYshow.
But now... @BaszuckiMatt has started his own youtube channel. Short, direct, no-nonsense videos about how he uses keto and other metabolic therapies to keep bipolar disorder symptoms at bay.
Give him a follow.

Kicking off day 2 of #ThinkTank2024 with @dj_keating on how research on the gut brain axis can have a clinical impact on mental health.
Really looking forward to it!
Great to be hosting Damien Keating on 5th June; Deputy Director of the Flinders Health & Medical Research institute. His research focusses on how sensory cells lining our gut wall can activate gut-brain signalling and the relevance of this pathway for mental health. @dj_keating
Really looking forward to learning more about eating disorders and sharing our work on the gut brain axis @FlindersHMRI @Flinders
Think Tank spotlight: Keynote Prof Damien Keating will be presenting exclusive new findings about the role of microbiome in mental health & new pathways identified in mood regulation.
