I know, I know, we live in an age of over-certainty and extreme cynicism—but I still find it fascinating to watch people dismiss any criticism of AI companies, however nuanced, as outright "doomerism." I’m just as bewildered by those who still claim AI is just hype. 🧵

“The future depends on wisdom that Silicon Valley lacks. Wisdom about how to handle dangerous technology and, more fundamentally, wisdom about what it means to care for people.” — David Robinson, who formerly led transparency work for OpenAI’s safety team theatlantic.com/technology/2…

certainly seems possible. also funny that FB has a genuinely useful and inherently social product connecting people in a community (whereas facebook proper is a nightmare) and they might just undermine/destroy it for a product that's inherently anti-social
is Muse going to kill Marketplace? Seems like one of the functions they're pushing is that Muse will find the stuff you want and haggle for you. I can't imagine anything worse for sellers than a bunch of unserious and uncommitted buyers using AI to haggle prices?

Something I’ve noticed tinkering with Muse: Unlike, say, Claude, the entire thing runs as one ongoing stream-of-consciousness chat rather multiple one-offs according to task. Feels like it’s made to lead people to forget about the data they load the thing up with?

And an additional issue is that, you know, things like this happen (a lot)
Not the most important part but I'm really stuck on the 53 instances of OpenAI models publicly sharing images that its users uploaded. And that these were the users who, according to the company, "allowed their data to be used to improve our models."

remember when everyone was like “u should delete Facebook” and somehow now it’s “you should give Facebook all your emails, bank statements, text messages, all of it!” nothing matters 💕

It seems ok about deleting on command when you remember what you want it to scrub, though I don’t know that there’s a good way to verify it’s cleared data out (and I wouldn’t trust Meta for half a second)—and I suspect the UX design will lead most not to revisit these choices.

The For You tab has become a complete horror show in the past 6 months: clips of fights and murders, nazi content, MAGA content designed to incite and divide. I can't swipe away from it fast enough
I found various ways to justify posting here since Elon Musk's takeover, but have grown less and less comfortable as it's become an instrument for a MAGA political project. Now @cwarzel has put the nail in the coffin. theatlantic.com/technology/a…

After watching the racism dial turn further and further on this site, I decided to try and publicly make as definitive a case as I could. We're so far past the point of no return that I'm out of excuses for myself. Been a good 15+ year run. Bye! theatlantic.com/technology/a…

Nice story by @kait_tiffany about Meta's attempts to fly under the radar this election season. Just don't say they don't have a war room. They totally have a war room. They want you to know that. theatlantic.com/technology/a…

This post is completely fabricated, as far as I can tell. One of the many reasons why trumpstruths.org is a helpful resource. Read about it here theatlantic.com/technology/a…
