ALT my post on doomworld, replying to Edward850: That's good, but please still consider the optics of "A Microsoft subsidiary buys a GPL game and invests time and money in replicating third-party GPL extensions so it can revoke the GPL and sell the game while advertising compatibility with yet more free third-party work." I'm sure you have, or could readily find, someone who could reimplement all of Boom from scratch. You also would not need to do that if Bethesda simply continued to release the source code for this game that's only still valuable to their portfolio because of the free work innumerable people have been doing for over thirty years, on the back of the original source release. Doom was the go-to example of an open source commercial game. I think having that rug pulled out from under us now that the second-richest company in the world thinks the game is profitable again — thanks to an unfathomable amount of work they didn't do — is distasteful.
