In a 99-game Celtics parade of destroying narratives, none have been obliterated more than the "struggle in the clutch" one.
In clutch minutes in the playoffs, Boston is essentially the greatest team in the history of the game...and quite possibly hyperbole itself.

Forget about the "If" part for now - some reasons for the 2nd part of your question -
Mavs are better offensively with him in, possessions that start after FTA's have lower EV, same with FGMs and mostly certainly the opposite is true of possessions that start off of live ball turnovers.
In addition teams usually have a dedicated defender(s) in to guard him who usually aren't as good offensively as some of their teammates.

1981 NBA finals Larry Bird didn't see a 20pt game until game 6. He avg 15 a game and only shot it at 40% but he led the team in rebounds and dimes. They took him away with traps and he fed Max all series. All you remember is he won and that's all that matters. #Celtics
