Did you know that on this day (June 11, 1913), women in Illinois scored a groundbreaking victory in the fight for suffrage? Local politicians passed a historic bill granting women the right to vote in presidential and municipal elections, making Illinois the first state east of the Mississippi to do so. The decision was highly controversial, sparking fierce debates across the nation. For suffragists, it was a monumental step forward, proving that political pressure and grassroots activism could break through entrenched opposition. For opponents, it was a shocking breach of tradition. #womensuffrage #womenrights

Oil’s earliest history begins not with deliberate discovery but with accidental encounters. In regions such as ancient Mesopotamia, Persia, and along the Caspian Sea, natural seepages brought bitumen and crude oil to the surface, forming sticky pools that clung to tools, hands, and clothing. Cuneiform tablets from the third millennium BC already reference 'iddu' (bitumen), showing that early societies recognized its adhesive and waterproofing qualities long before they understood its chemical nature. As historian James G. McHugh notes in his study of ancient materials, these early encounters framed petroleum not as an energy source but as a practical substance embedded in daily life and ritual. Classical authors provide some of the richest descriptions of these early uses. Herodotus, writing in the 5th century BC, describes Babylon’s walls being sealed with bitumen, while Strabo later recounts the “ever-burning” natural gas flames of the Caucasus, phenomena that inspired religious reverence among Zoroastrians. Archaeological evidence from the Royal Tombs of Ur shows bitumen used in everything from boat caulking to funerary art, demonstrating its economic and symbolic importance. These sources reveal a world in which petroleum seepages were integrated into construction, medicine, warfare, and spirituality, centuries before the idea of “fuel” existed. Modern exploration reframed oil entirely. The 19th‑century shift from surface seepages to deliberate drilling, most famously Edwin Drake’s 1859 well in Pennsylvania, marked the transition from ancient material to industrial commodity. Geologists such as Wallace Pratt later argued that “oil is found in the minds of men,” emphasizing the scientific revolution that replaced chance encounters with systematic exploration. Seismic imaging, offshore drilling, and global energy markets transformed a once-mysterious natural substance into the backbone of modern economies. Yet the ancient record reminds us that petroleum’s story is far older than industrialization: it begins with humans noticing a strange black substance seeping from the earth and slowly learning what it could do. © The Historian's Den #archaeohistories

The timeless beauty of Layla, on an acoustic, it's way better. The secret of that beauty lies on the finger tips of its creator though, Eric Clapton. That's what real art sounds like.

Gentle reminder: technologies have evolved since 1972 and a tanker morotoruim from that era may not be justified given current technologies. The fact that NDP can’t recognize changes in technologies since 1972 demonstrates why they are not ready for government #canpoli #bcpoli
The House of Commons UNANIMOUSLY passed the oil tanker moratorium in northwest B.C. in 1972 because they knew how sensitive the coast & how dangerous the waters are. An oil spill would be catastrophic. Economic development is one thing - being reckless & short-sighted another.
