Spectember Day 28: Far into the future of Goldfish World, salt marshes teem with strange wildlife, from hexapod mud walkers to massive spiderlike descendants of coin flip fish, to the shreep, a large land shrimp that has evolved hairlike filaments. #spectember #spectember2026

Spectember Day 27: In an archipelago where constant updrafts of wind are emitted by magical geology, many organisms have taken to the skies, like this giant swoop, a skate that rides the strong wind to catch shorebirds and other flying fish. #spectember #spectember2026

Spectember Day 26: The centaur is a cursorial papionine monkey that sacrificed finger dexterity for digitigrade locomotion on tough, hooflike fingertips. Males exhibit ostentatious handlike flanges which they inflate during courtship displays. #spectember #spectember2026

Spectember Day 25: A couple of galeks, which are derived hesperornitheans that evolved to fill pinniped-like niches #spectember #spectember2026

Spectember Day 24: In the rings surrounding a distant planet, tiny aliens hop between ice and rock looking for food and company. They can survive on very little oxygen and use metabolic gas to steer when not attached to a solid surface. #spectember #spectember2026
23
Spectember Day 23: The pegasus is a terrestrial syngnathid fish native to wetlands of the northern Mediterranean. It makes no vocal noise but it stridulates with its featherlike spines to make thunderclap-like sounds. #spectember #spectember2026

Spectember Day 22: These giant camels roam the oak savannas of a continent in one of my worldbuilding projects. Their upper lip has evolved into a pair of prehensile trunks which they use to strip branches and bring the leaves to their mouths. #spectember #spectember2026

Spectember Day 21: Long ago, pipes on the generation ship burst and submerged ancient residential and research areas with freshwater. Now, these underwater caverns are rich with the descendants of lab frogs, zebrafish, and others. #spectember #spectember2026

Spectember Day 20: Another alien world, this one a desert planet whose fauna has a strange method of locomotion. These "wheels" roll quickly across desert sands, but they don't get disoriented since their sensory organs are adapted to rapid rotation. #spectember #spectember2026

Spectember Day 19: Strange things have been happening on Goldfish World. This is the coin flip fish, a semi-terrestrial goldfish evolved from a flatfish-like ancestor, which moves on land by flopping around in a controlled manner. #spectember #spectember2026

Spectember Day 18: The feathered serpent is a massive gilled caecilian found in isolated freshwater bodies in Central and South America. Its power and affinity for rainstorms has inspired many stories in local cultures. #spectember #spectember2026

Spectember Day 17: MORE MONOTREMES! These critters are fully aquatic with exception of gravid females, who must beach themselves to lay their eggs. The smaller species is an estuarine filter feeder and the larger species is a pelagic durophage. #spectember #spectember2026

Spectember Day 16: Two bipedal monotremes in an alternate universe where there were simply more monotremes! A small, hopping insectivore and a theropod-like hypercarnivore. #spectember #spectember2026

Spectember Day 15: The open fields of the generation ship are inhabited by fierce predators descended from the domestic chicken. These animals exhibit extreme sexual dimorphism and much like lions, the hens are the hunters and roosters the protectors. #spectember #spectember2026

Spectember Day 14: The gryphon is a highly derived dermochelyid turtle adapted for desert and scrubland, rarely found across Central Asia. Though fairly slow moving, a threatened gryphon will attack assailants with its sharp "wing" claws. #spectember #spectember2026

Spectember Day 13: On the same planet as we saw on Day 5, a free-swimming predator chases a smaller distant relative through colorful glass reefs, formed by conglomerations of diatom-like organisms. #spectember #spectember2026
24
Spectember Day 12: Back on Goldfish World, the first steps out of the water are taken by shrimp! This species lives in thickets of tangleweed, a clade of green algae that clumps together and sends offshoots like rhizomes to colonize other areas. #spectember #spectember2026

Spectember Day 11: Some trees in a magic-setting that evolved to incorporate metals in the soil into their anatomy! We have a figwort with reflective gold leaf hairs, an araucaria with bloodlike iron sap, and an acacia that grows steel thorns. #spectember #spectember2026

Spectember Day 10: Some of the fauna of this low-gravity moon use metabolic heat to fill up sacs to float in the air, much like hot air balloons. Vast blooms of aeroplankton sustain these organisms which can grow to a dozen meters across. #spectember #spectember2026 #alien

Spectember Day 9: On a generation ship abandoned by its creators, genetically engineered plastic-eating isopods break down polymers into useful material in the soil. These tiny animals are the backbone of the lush ecosystem we saw on Day 4. #spectember #spectember2026
