Harry Belafonte was so much a fixture in my home growing up that we considered him a part of our family. Harry was more than a friend to our family. He was also a treasured political ally who worked hand in hand as a supporter, counselor, and strategist with my father and uncle during their civil rights battles. Very few Americans knew that he largely funded the Civil Rights movement. He did as much to advance, secure, and demand civil rights and the democratic process for Black Americans as almost any other civil rights activist. His messages were always powerful. He always conducted himself with enviable poise and grace. Harry kept the right feet to the hottest fires as he committed his life to demand that all Americans receive equal rights, equal pay, and equal protection of the law.
