This is tacky. Especially from a journalist. What you imply is that current leadership has not been prioritizing citizens’ safety. You KNOW this is untrue. Mayor Bass has from day 1 prioritized ALL residents—including the unhoused (which I would have thought would be important to you but perhaps not). LA residents voted. And over a hundred million dollars couldn’t get your billionaire candidate across the finish line. So perhaps now show some class in the face of this completely unpredictable, natural disaster and devastation, use your huge platform to report actual facts about the fire department’s actual budget and keep the attacks (even the ones with transparent veils) to a minimum. And by minimum, I mean ZERO.
LA cannot go forward with the status quo. LA is no longer what it was. It has to be different. It has to prioritize the safety of its citizens, police, fire, schools. LA residents deserve better. Chief Crowley is saying LA cannot sustain itself. It needs more help. Chief Crowley says she rang the bell. The mayoral race presented a clear choice last time around. Moving forward, LA residents have to decide what’s important and what’s not. Right now what’s important is getting this fire under control, getting firefighters the support they need, getting our neighbors the support they need. Once that happens it’s time to rethink what is and imagine what can be. @CollinRugg

I joined @winwithblackwomen to give a comprehensive breakdown of why the attacks against Mayor Bass are not just off base but disproven by acknowledging the LAFD budget and spending numbers in context. Using my 20 yrs of budget development and tracking, here I analyze the fiscal picture that has been obscured to exploit the LA wildfires for political gain. The pdf version is available for download on my site. #reeciewiththereceipts #WinWithBlackWomen #NotOnOurWatch

We’re launching a new, simple intake system to report price gouging — call @MyLA311 to report illegally hiked rents and prices.
We have no tolerance for it.

As a proud Angeleno, the fires that have devastated our county have been heart-breaking. I am so fortunate that while my own home in the Palisades was at risk and had some damage from the fires, I am safe. So many others cannot say the same, and my heart goes out to all of those who have been affected and are rebuilding their lives from ash.
I wrote this poem, “Smoldering Dawn”, to process my own fears and prayers for us as we come together as a community to heal from this trauma. While we mourn what we have lost, we also give thanks to the first responders, firefighters and civilians who have fought so tirelessly to combat these fires and ensure the safety of so many.
To honor them, I’m releasing this poem as a fundraiser for the California Fire Foundation, which is offering support and aid to firefighters families, as well as those who have been impacted by the fires. 💛 Give what you can, help who you can, stay safe, and this too we shall conquer.

A ridiculous lie. We have doubled the size of our firefighting army, built the world’s largest aerial firefighting fleet, and increased the forest management ten-fold since taking office.
Time to serve these folks the facts.

And even Elvis says so.
