Once again have been told the "White Hart" is the oldest pub in #Thatcham and it was established in 1623. Rubbish, that is marketing. So the White Hart was know to have existed as a building in 1613, no idea if it was an Inn then but certainly was by the 1670's.
From the 1577 survey #Thatcham had 2 Inns and 5 Alehouses. No idea what they were, one is likely the "King's Arms" which is speculated to have been remodelled, perhaps renamed the King's Head.
A more detailed analysis to come but for moment look at my @nickbits blogs nickbits.co.uk/blog/2017/02/… and nickbits.co.uk/blog/2017/07/…

LiDAR Lens lidarlens.sarsen.org/ is, I think, the best and most complete free LiDAR tool there is for England and Wales. Every square metre of both countries' 1 m LiDAR is there, live, in a lens you drag across the map. You can light it from any angle, exaggerate it, and switch between hillshade, multi-direction hillshade, slope, local relief, sky-view factor, aspect and red relief, until faint banks, ditches, barrows and lost field systems jump out. Click any spot and it tells you the ground's measurements and the recorded sites nearby, with links straight to the records. Old OS maps, aerial photos and modern maps sit underneath for comparison. It works on a phone in the field as well as on a desktop. It costs nothing, there is no login, no account, and no adverts. sarsen.org/2026/10/lidar-len…

White Hart in #Thatcham has had some new materials and I note "Est. 1623". So I have the "Harte" in 1613 but it is not noted as an Inn. Not saying it wasnt but cannot confirm at that time. Certainly was though by 1674, we have "sign of the Hart".
As to it being the oldest pub in Thatcham, surviving, the Chequers and possibly King's Head would also be in the running. nickbits.co.uk/blog/2017/02/…
