Keeping up with the latest news and events in our industry is brutal - it almost feels like it can be a second job. That's why we're launching a new podcast and newsletter, Infrastructure Frontiers - every Monday morning me, Nick Stinemates, Paul Stack and a special guest will fill you in on everything that happened last week in AI and Infrastructure Engineering. We read the news so you don't have to. swamp-club.com/podcast In our first episode we are joined by infrastructure engineering legend Sean Escriva! We cover: * @lorenc_dan phases out code review at Chainguard * @github launches stacked PRs * OpenAI reduces the price of 5.6 Luna and Terra * @stack72 explains that best practices come and go, but architecture is forever * OpenAI releases Codex Security * Kimi K3 on Hugging Face & Dario Amodei gets mad about distillation * @superguenter thinks Open Weight models are AI's Kubernetes moment * @CTOAdvisor explains deterministic AI is an architecture problem, not a model problem * @mitchellh starts a new company, Superlogical If you read something interesting this week and want us to cover it, tell me about it here, and I'll include it next week.

I was going to stay silent on this, but nah. Fully agree with Charlie here. It doesn't even matter if the contents are defensible. The tone is just abhorrent. And it is the worst kind of personal "attack": it is the cowards way. He starts by saying it is not personal, amd instead of personal attacks, resorts to personal insinuations. The part about him trying to raise money instead of living out of donations is a very low blow, and "beginner energy"... no comments.
I find this post to be really disappointing... It's explicitly framed as 'not a personal criticism', then goes on to include bunch of very personal criticisms about Jarred. andrewkelley.me/post/my-thou…

Periodic reminder that Russia is still targeting and killing civilians.
… it is night in Ukraine right now, almost 4 a.m. Ukrainians are underground, those who have such an opportunity in their cities, while others are just in their homes and apartments, hearing, and even watching from their windows, yet another round of nightly explosions and flashes. Some are closer, some are further away, but the explosions are felt with the entire body. As always, the morning will reveal more.

Mates, please. Just stop with this BS: "175,000 people die from heat in Europe every year, while in the US only 3,000 do." The comparison is bogus. If we compare apples to apples, the numbers are much closer, and the US does not necessarily come out looking the best. Let me explain. I'm an AC-loving emu, but I'm also a perfectly objective emu, so let's go! For starters, the 175,000 figure covers the WHO European Region, which includes countries such as Russia and the nations of Central Asia. It's basically a catch-all region with nearly a billion people, and some of those countries are hot, autocratic, and relatively underdeveloped. But that's not the biggest problem. The biggest problem is methodological. The American "small" figure of roughly 3,000 comes from death certificates. Heat must be listed as a cause of death or a contributing factor. I don't know exactly how the coding works, but essentially someone qualified has to look at the deceased and conclude, "Yeah, heat defo played a role." The European 175,000 figure is based on statistical modelling. Analysts estimate how many deaths are correlated with high temperature and then convert that relationship into an annual number of heat-related deaths. This methodology does not require a coroner to explicitly identify heat as a contributing factor. The European method naturally produces higher estimates. The American method naturally produces lower estimates. So if we want a genuine apples-to-apples comparison, we need to apply the same methodology to different countries. And researchers have done exactly that. A 2015 Lancet study estimated temperature-related mortality across multiple countries. While it included only four European countries: Italy, Spain, Sweden, and the UK, it allows for a more meaningful comparison. Using a similar methodology and adjusting for population, the United States would come out somewhere in the middle. It would have roughly 10,000 heat-related deaths per year—lower than Italy and Spain, but HIGHER than Sweden and the UK. So the AC-abundant Yanks seem to be sitting right in the middle of their AC-deprived "Europoor" counterparts. Kind of an anticlimactic conclusion, but that's usually what happens when you're being perfectly objective. Stay cool! Or warm, depending on which season your hemisphere is currently enjoying!

Its wild that Europeans are perfectly fine with baking their grandparents to death during heatwaves... 175k every year...mainly elderly......Thats INSANE...and preventable.... ..You almost have to wonder why no push for A/C with so many dying...... USA...around 3k

In March, we released benchmark numbers alongside SpacetimeDB 2.0. After a thorough investigation, we discovered a serious error in SpacetimeDB which caused our results to be misleading. We would like to sincerely apologize to our community. Read the full article: spacetimedb.com/blog/benchma…

Cloudflare built a global cache purge system that runs under 150 milliseconds. This is how they did it. Using RockDB to maintain local CDN cache, and a peer-to-peer data center distributed system and clever engineering, they went from 1.5 second purge, down to 150 ms. However, this isn’t the full picture, because that 150 ms is actually the P50. In this video I explore Clouldflare CDN work, how the old core-based centralized quicksilver, lazy purge work compared to the new coreless, decentralized active purge. I explore the pros and cons of both systems and give you my thoughts of this system. One of my favorites videos Video: youtu.be/Ou-4rfillYo Audio: open.spotify.com/episode/7rM…

This viral tweet and accompanying video is a textbook example of how racists distort and manipulate media to incite pile-ons. Their target seems to be a lovely young woman but she isn't white and that's all the excuse these racists need. Here's the truth behind the video: /1
