Every measles outbreak becomes a national emergency, complete with frightening headlines, warnings about unvaccinated children, and demands for greater vaccine compliance. Yet when children die or suffer serious injuries following vaccination, the same medical establishment suddenly becomes extraordinarily cautious about acknowledging causation. In fact, one would have to drop a hydrogen bomb for them to admit one vaccine death. Why does one kind of death provoke public outrage while another disappears into bureaucratic lunacy? In December 2025, FDA reviewers examined 96 reports of pediatric deaths following COVID vaccination. They classified two as probably vaccine-related and five as possibly related. I just learned that the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where I trained, has launched a program to increase flu vaccine uptake among children by vaccinating them while under anesthesia.” The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) operates a program called “Close Your Eyes, We'll Immunize,” which began in 2023. It administers influenza vaccines to children while they are sedated or under general anesthesia for unrelated procedures. According to CHOP's own May 20, 2026, report, the program administered 2,054 influenza vaccine doses during the 2025–2026 flu season. About one-third of participating families said their children would not have received the flu vaccine otherwise. The physician quoted above is Dr. Madhava Setty, who criticized the initiative in an October 21 interview with The Defender. His strongest objection concerns patient safety. During anesthesia, physicians must carefully monitor the effects of anesthetics, antibiotics, analgesics, and other medications. Setty asks a reasonable question: Why introduce an additional product during a surgical procedure when that product is not needed to perform the operation? CHOP's own report acknowledges that vaccine-related symptoms could be confused with those arising from a child's underlying illness or recovery. There is one fact that must be clear: CHOP says the vaccination is administered only when the family agrees. However, CHOP acknowledges that time constraints in the perioperative setting can limit detailed discussions. That raises a legitimate informed-consent question: Are parents preparing for their child's surgery being given enough time and information to evaluate unrelated preventive interventions? It is disturbing to turn a child's surgical appointment into an additional opportunity to increase vaccination rates without sufficiently examining the clinical consequences of combining interventions. Dr. Paul Offit is based at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). He holds several influential positions.
