Professional update After nearly eight years, I have finally signed off from ThePrint @ThePrintIndia I owe a huge debt of gratitude to @ShekharGupta for being a mentor, guiding me, challenging me and helping me evolve as a journalist. He will always remain a reporter’s editor, someone who understands the craft, pushes you to do better and never lets you settle. It is like a new day everyday. Mehdi, the guy next to you went on this long racist rant saying that Vivek's whole goal in life is just to fuck white women. You just sat there laughing the whole time. Do you think people can't watch a video? What's wrong with you??

The entire population turned out to give a heroic farewell to their three sons, who were killed by the security forces while demanding basic rights, greater democratic space, and accountability. Their funerals became a powerful expression of collective grief, anger, and solidarity. Today, all of #AzadKashmir is mourning. An operation against the sit-in and protesters is underway amid a blanket communications blackout. The use of military force against our own people has repeatedly backfired, and this time #Rawalakot has proved to be a hard nut to crack. May God protect my brothers and sisters. #RightsMovementAJK @JKJAAC_official @JKJAAC_

There was no Sikh Genocide. There was a pogrom which will forever be a blot on Indian history even though India has acknowledged this tragedy but this was no genocide.
🚨 Journalist Rupa Subramanya sparks controversy by questioning the 1984 Sikh Genocide as Brampton 🇨🇦 honours victims and survivors by lowering flags at City Hall to half-mast for Sikh Genocide Awareness Week (Nov 1–7). @rupasubramanya

Notwithstanding my unwavering loyalty to Punjab, I cannot deny that Himachal Pradesh has a right to electricity from this project. The Gobind Sagar and the Bhakra Dam lie within its territorial jurisdiction, and it is riparian to both the Satluj and the Beas. Electricity generation, unlike irrigation water, is also a function of topography. The Supreme Court rested Himachal's 7.19% on its population share as a successor State, but the outcome is just and equitable. Today's cashless settlement of 11,973 million units over 20 years closes a 60-year-old account without a rupee changing hands between the States.
#BREAKING on Bar & Bench Supreme Court brings a decades-old inter-State electricity dispute to a close, settling the mechanism for implementing Himachal Pradesh's entitlement to 7.19% power from the Bhakra-Nangal and Beas projects. A bench of CJI Surya Kant, Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana accepts a cashless settlement framework evolved through consultations led by Attorney General R Venkataramani involving Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana. Under the arrangement, Himachal Pradesh will receive 11,973 million units of electricity over the next 20 years from Punjab and Haryana. The original entitlement was calculated at 13,066 million units by the Central Electricity Authority. An adjustment of ₹420 crore towards historical capital costs incurred in constructing the dams has been factored into the settlement. While Himachal Pradesh sought implementation over 10 years, Punjab pressed for 30 years and the Attorney General proposed 15 years, the Supreme Court settles on a 20-year period. The ruling resolves the longstanding question of implementing the Supreme Court's 2011 decree without requiring monetary payments between the States.

Yes, I am proud to be Panje Mangesh Rao’s great-grandson. Kannada is a global language & Kannadigas are a proud, talented people. They don’t need “activists”. Your parochial duplicity will be called out.
And @ShivAroor you are grandson of a Kannada literary figure. Great to see you speaking against Kannada, Kannadiga and Karnataka without evidence.

For all the rona dhona a section of Indians who hate the BJP indulge in daily when it comes to the first-past-the-post voting system; try checking the 2024 Lok Sabha election results if we had adopted the European proportional representation system. Nass kaat loge apni as regional outfits will get wiped out while BJP and Congress will benefit immensely. In India, the regional parties benefit tremendously because of the current system.

In July 1938, a 26 year old chemist sat for a job interview in Simla and told Sir S.S. Bhatnagar, sitting on the selection committee, that some of Bhatnagar's own statements were factually incorrect. Bhatnagar gave him the job. And took a fatherly interest in him for the rest of his life. The young man was Santi Ranjan Palit. You have not heard of him. Polymer chemists everywhere still use his work. On her mother's word, he refused to take his degree from the hands of the British Chancellor at convocation. Tea, to her mother, was a British planter's crop. So Palit never drank tea in his life. Stanford wanted to give him a doctorate. He declined. He already held a DSc from Calcutta. Instead, in 1946, he went to Brooklyn to train under Herman Mark, the father of polymer science. He came home months before Independence. M.N. Saha made him Prof. and Head of Physical Chemistry at IACS, Calcutta, in 1947. There he worked out something quietly elegant: certain dyes stick to specific chemical end-groups on polymer chains, so colour itself becomes a measuring instrument. His dye-partition method for finding polymer end-groups came out in 1960-62 and was picked up in international journals. Herman Mark's verdict: "the leading polymer scientist in India and in fact the most prominent representative of this discipline in the Far East, a recognized member of the small group of leading polymer scientists in the entire world." More than 350 research papers. More than 80 PhD students. And, in a student's recollection, he turned half his Calcutta mansion into a free hostel for needy students, meals included. The father of polymer research in India. No Wikipedia page. His only biography is a single academy memoir. Sources: INSA Biographical Memoirs - Santi Ranjan Palit (Fellow, 1953); S.R. Palit, Die Makromolekulare Chemie 38 (1960); J. Polymer Science 50 (1961); Pure & Applied Chemistry 4 (1962); student recollection, SPSI. Photo 1: Palit's signed portrait, from the first page of the INSA memoir. Photo 2: His 1939 shellac paper from the Lac Research Institute, the exact job Bhatnagar gave him after that Simla interview. S.R. Palit & G.N. Bhattacharya (1939), via Zenodo. Photo 3: A 1975 paper from the University of Missouri titled "The Palit Relationship Applied to Polystyrene" - American researchers testing and confirming an equation named after him, while he was still working in Calcutta. This is the visual proof of "polymer chemists everywhere still use his work. Photo 4: The memoir page with the mother/tea vow, the Bhatnagar interview, and the declined Stanford doctorate, highlighted.
