A thread of threads - the mini-book reviews that I have posted here during 2025. In chronological order. I happily recommend all but one of these books
This looks good
Mark Solms and Nick Humphrey are two of the most important contributors to the discussion about machine consciousness. Join us on 3rd November as they debate the fundamental questions.

I've had the pleasure to interview both Mark Solms and Nick Humphrey. Here's the recording of the @LondonFuturists webinar featuring Mark Solms... youtube.com/watch?v=L9h8-HFm…

Here's a soul-searching set of questions you can try to answer to better understand humanity's existential and catastrophic risks. From @AISafetyAction. Warning: Not recommended for anyone faint hearted or easily triggered existentialsafety.org/questi…
Well worth watching: An interview with two of the safety researchers who were recently fired by OpenAI. Contains more details about the investigation of the Hugging Face incident, and the importance of mandating independent auditors within frontier AI labs youtu.be/tjAg_KxApmw
Humanity has only perhaps one or two more years left of living in vaguely normal circumstances
The most prescient AI forecasters I know:
* Carl Shulman
* Daniel Kokotajlo (What 2026 looks like, AI 2027)
* Leopold (Situational Awareness)
* Ryan Greenblatt (#2 in 2025 forecasting competition)
All seem to expect broadly beyond-human AI 2028-2029.
The landscape of severe threats is wickedly multidimensional
To make it through this alive and happy we have to dodge:
• Severe human misuse (esp bioweapons from states / terrorists)
• Severe human concentration of power (AI lab or gov)
• Rogue AI (including for decades after AIs clearly no longer need humans to survive)
• A US-China or other war prompted by AI disruption
• Severe economic disempowerment, or the world just generally being unpleasant and unfulfiling
Many difficult gates to pass through, none of which we've made massive progress on so far.
(On top of that to avoid a moral catastrophe we also have to make sure we never accidentally make our AIs into moral patients who are enslaved or suffering.)
What levers can we find and pull, to tackle the root causes of widespread suffering and illness? In this recorded presentation, I draw on lessons from history to provide foresight of potential future cures for the diseases causing the greatest suffering youtube.com/watch?v=_Rabwf7E…

A chilling account of the huge effort applied by the Kremlin's foreign disinformation network to manipulate useful idiots in the West theins.press/en/inv/298359
Read about how @JDVance and others fell for a lie about Volodymyr Zelensky concocted by agents of Russia's Presidential Administration. And how the Vice President's falling for it was collected in a file sent directly to the Kremlin. Inside Putin's "Doppelgänger" operation, based on leaked correspondence between the PA and Russia's Agency for Social Design: theins.press/en/inv/298359
A stark warning: "AI on track to ‘crowd out’ human decision-making in warfare... including in the nuclear domain... Many of these evolving AI systems are opaque, and are increasing the risk of error, miscalculation and therefore of unintended escalation" news.un.org/en/story/2026/10…

David Wood retweeted
"there are people who think having equity in these companies will secure for them some kind of permanent existence in the future. They think planet-spanning minds will not only respect the property rights of primates, but will privilege some of these primates over others, because they have a piece of paper with about a kilobyte of magical primate words such as “whereas” and “notwithstanding”.
Just reason it out. Does it make sense?"
Still the best article written on the likely social consequences of ASI.
