Biology is incredibly powerful, and more incredibly frustrating. I built/build things. Doing that again, with a new flourish.

They can try. Sure.
If the U.S. is harboring a fugitive from justice, is Brazil allowed to invade the U.S. and kidnap Flavio Bolsonaro like they did with Maduro in Venezuela?

Structurally long civilization is a great line and a great concept for most people to really internalize. I think I’ll go structurally long a new truck with this budget.
All the blackpilling on my TL has me worried some of you will turn into preppers, so here's a get-it-over-with list by a former hardcore prepper that'll let you scratch that itch then move on with your life.

Fascinating read
Former MIT scientist David Sabatini just won $6 million in a landmark case against false allegations of r*pe and sexual assault, which destroyed his career. Once on track to win the Nobel Prize, Sabatini’s ex-girlfriend accused him of r*pe in 2020 and began calling him the ‘Weinstein of science.’ He was later accused of perpetuating a “bro culture” in his lab. As a result, he was stripped of all his funding, lost his job, and went bankrupt. We interviewed Sabatini (@DMSabatini) about the verdict, which he says made him “proud to be an American.” @neerajadeshp reports 👇

The circle of life
Bad outputs create good prompting. Good prompting creates good outputs. Good outputs create lazy prompting. And, lazy prompting creates bad outputs.

25 years ago is about the time I moved away from Seattle and I have fond memories of the culture, history and life there. Sad to see the choices being made now and the direction it appears to be headed. Maybe a phoenix rises from the ashes?
25 years ago, Seattle seemed like the city of the future. I guess the whole PNW peaked around then. People loved it, they wouldn’t shut up about it. I loved going up there, anywhere from Victoria/Vancouver to Portland. What a choice to make, to wreck that whole beautiful region.

I’m split on whether the labs will benefit from going vertical here versus building the rails and platforms we all build on. Everything about human psychology and behavior suggests they need to choose door #2.
Over the past few months, Anthropic scientists have engaged in deep research partnerships with six organizations developing new medicines. We've also begun drug discovery efforts of our own. In doing so, we’ve learned much more about how Claude can support the many stages of drug development. In this blog post, we share some early results from these efforts, and describe how this work fits in with our wider ambitions in the life sciences. anthropic.com/research/early…

I agree with the concept but the chances an AI drug with a clear causal chain back to AI clears the clinic in 2 years is low. Wonder if the better route is for AI to provide an explosion of new biology understanding that makes for tantalizing drug able possibilities
If AI produces some type of drug discovery breakthrough in the next 2 years I think it would strongly impact perceived regulatory risk from dems getting back into power. Will be hard being full on anti-AI if it is curing cancer. Not an expert in drug discovery tho idk how likely.

A server rack in Singapore runs on 16 million living human brain cells. - Each unit grows 200,000 adult blood-derived human neurons on a silicon chip drawing just 30 watts at 37.0°C - 120 units in Melbourne and a 20-unit rack in Singapore stay alive up to 6 months on a 72-hour glucose perfusion loop - Wired into a physical quadruped robot, the living neurons steered it around obstacles in real time at 40 Hz Tech giants are locking up nuclear plants to feed 1,000 watt silicon GPUs while living human wetware learns from sparse physical data on 30 watts.

I was really surprised how fast interest in this space fell off after COVID. I would have thought we were entering a golden decade for this research and businesses. The reality was a hot 24 months. There are places working on this like @ashishkjha at @BioRadarUSA
For anyone getting into biology, please consider taking airborne disease resistance more seriously. It's a super important area of medicine that is a huge cause of death and sickness but easily gets forgotten. We're likely to get many more airborne plagues in the future due to the combination of not just extremely dense and interconnected society (including city and farm animals), but also accidents from bio research and offensive biotech (both from random people and from secret government programs that can easily get themselves exempted from safety restrictions), all enhanced by powerful AI. Right now, this area is getting way less love than longevity research (which continues to be super important!), but it's an area where there are lots of unclaimed wins that we know exactly how to do (but are not yet doing) with present-day tech: * early detection * passive universal testing * filtration/ventilation/UVC * better vaccines (including making them open source and open science) * cryptography to make all of the above privacy-preserving We can have China-level pandemic resistance with Sweden-level limited intrusion into people's lives, and then go even further. We just have to actually do the work for it.

🚨Hello, 911, I’d like to report a robbery in progress
Trade: Colts have agreed to send eight-time Pro-Bowl guard Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks, per me and @rapsheet. Nelson is on an expiring contract and the Colts are opting to get back draft capital now before they could lose him in free agency. But an all-time Colt now moves on to the Seahawks.

democrats: if we take power we will seize elon musk's companies and put him in prison and no, we do not care if he technically committed any crime or not also democrats, somehow: why is elon musk funding republicans?
Elon Musk is dumping half a billion dollars into Republican races. Why? Because Democrats in Congress won’t be a rubber stamp for Donald Trump and will actually fight to lower costs.
