To me the biggest risk of AI is brain rot. I have more and more situations like this. Some coworker shares a report on something they did. I read, and find something fishy. I ask about and get no answer. I ask again and I'm told: the agent said that. And no follow up. It's clear form the interaction that they did not read the report they shared. Their brain is not used as it should be. I am not against AI at all (fortunate for something working at NVIDIA). I use AI a lot. But I use it as a tool. I own the result and whenever I see something fishy I ask about its output I force a change if I am not convinced. I wish there was a way to force people to read the AI output they share with others.

This is part of our work at @UMmalta in collaboration with @ZJU_China through the Sino-Malta fund by @mt_xjenzamalta. Project DiHICS, lead by Prof Ing Carl Debono, explored practical ways of using AI methods to monitor critical concrete infrastructure. This paper shows in one of the outputs.

Why is the glittering interior of St John’s Co-Cathedral a nightmare for photogrammetry? Reflective gold leaf, bronze & dark marble create shifting highlights that move with every camera angle. The software mistakes changes in reflections for changes in geometry. Solution: Flatten contrast across all 99,000 images to remove baked-in lighting, then AI denoise the resulting digital grain (that step alone took ~1 month of processing). Result: A clean 25–30 billion triangle mesh that holds up even on the gilt details. How do you digitise a cathedral when you can only work at night? St John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta is an active church + major tourist site. Our window: 7pm till (very) late. In June 2023, we seized a rare chance when the world’s largest tapestry set (Rubens-designed Flemish masterpieces) was back on display for the first time since 1990, likely the last before the new museum. 7 nights. ~99k images (Canon R5 8K + drone) + 43 LIDAR scans (Faro M70) = 2.18 TB. Full workflow at @siggraph 2026 on 22 July. Paper: dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/38160… #SIGGRAPH2026 @StargateMT #Malta

The anthropic ban should be a wake up call for all organizations. - don't rely on one model or model provider - don't cancel open source, embrace it - mix and match and fall back to other models dynamically - don't blindly indulge in token-maxxing - find the best performance-cost trade-off

Before Malta made headlines for being the first country in the world to roll out free premium AI access to all citizens, the small country was already one of Europe’s most AI-active nations. 🤖 👉️ Read more about it here: buff.ly/7aPCKkO

Malta just became the first country to give every resident free ChatGPT Plus for a year. The catch? You have to finish a free government course on how to use AI first. A nation of 500,000 people just turned AI literacy into a public utility. The US is not going to do this. Not in 2026. Not in 2027. Probably not ever. Which means the gap is now structural. In Malta, the baseline office worker in 12 months will know how to write a prompt, run a workflow, and pull leverage out of a model. In the US, that same worker is still waiting for HR to approve a Copilot license. This is the part most American founders are missing: 1. AI literacy is a country-level moat now Whole populations are getting trained at once. Not bootcamps. Not LinkedIn courses. National rollouts. 2. The American advantage was building the models That advantage shrinks fast when other countries get better at using them than we are. 3. Your team is your country If you are running a US company, nobody is showing up to train your people. You do it, or you fall behind the Maltese accountant. At Zing we already see the split inside our own client base. The teams that forced AI literacy in Q1 are shipping in days. The teams still "evaluating tools" are quoting 4 weeks for work the first group does before lunch. Malta just made it national policy. You can make it company policy on Monday. The countries treating AI like electricity are going to eat the ones treating it like a side project.

Proud to see Malta making history today with the launch of our National AI Literacy programme, which includes a premium subscription and marks the world’s first national rollout of its kind! 🇲🇹🤖 Through the @MDIA_Malta "AI for All" initiative, every citizen can complete a @UMmalta course on responsible AI use and get free access for one year. This is real empowerment that equips families, students, and workers with both access and literacy needed today in the AI's era. As Principal Investigator on this initiative, it’s incredibly rewarding to see it launch...when the real work starts. I wish to thank the teams at @OpenAI, @MDIA_Malta, and the University of Malta, together with Minister @SilvioSchembri, for the commitment to see this through. OpenAI signed a deal with Malta's government: All Maltese residents (and citizens abroad) get 1 year of ChatGPT Plus free after finishing a free AI usage course. Program starts this month and scales with course completions. Malta is the first country to launch something like this. No financial terms disclosed. Interesting push for nationwide AI literacy!
