Spoke to an Anthropic employee today. They have a near-100% p(doom), but they think the only chance of survival is that they're somehow completely wrong about alignment and it turns out to be solvable, and the only way to get there is by accelerating capabilities as fast as possible. They were much more confident that humanity would never have the political will to do what needs to be done to stop ASI development than that alignment would be solved, even though they think alignment will almost certainly not be solved
They have not called their elected representatives to inform them that this is what they believe
If we look at how humanity currently has handled the digital world, it points toward what great power does towards worlds--when power is unrestrained by wisdom, judgment and human collaboration, worlds fall.
Before the AI mega companies came on, the risks were evident. As humans, we tell stories of on many matters, to learn what is wise and good, and what isn't.
That understanding became muddled in the race for profit and dominance. That is why I find this to be an impressive move.

President Trump claimed that AI oligarchs could regulate themselves because they “love our country.”
Now, Google is threatening schools: if you stop your students from using AI, we will cut off your access to Google Search.
That’s not love. That’s extortion.
PAUSE AI NOW.

“The incentive structures right now for these companies are to replace workers."
Wes McEnany, Labor Outreach and Coalition Builder at FLI, joined @NewsNation to speak about AI’s impact on jobs, the future of employment, and the need for a national social conversation on AI.
If AI automates intelligence, knowledge and art. Then it is of importance to hone such skills and talents, to not be disempowered individually and societally by such technology.
This seems really bad. This stuff should be shutdown. Legislation and accountability is needed for AI urgently. The recklessness of AI must cease!

Immediate, indefinite, international moratorium on frontier AI development.
One thing I'll say is, I think it's important that we still write our thoughts and words in our voice, such as it is. Putting our thoughts, feelings and ideas through machinery erases what we are.
Is it obvious to you why AI cannot be allowed to (recursively) self-improve?
Here’s why I think it should not be allowed:

Technological progress increases capabilities. Without good judgment, obtained through humanities and art, society regresses.
