Cleveland is giving out 100 ebike rebates and applications open September 1 at EBikeCleveland.com. The biggest rebate is $1,500, and that tier is income-qualified, so you need a household income at or below 80% of the Cleveland area median to get it. Every other permanent Cleveland resident who is at least 18 gets $500. It's a point-of-sale rebate you redeem at a participating local bike shop, and it covers safety equipment and accessories along with the bike. Selection is a random drawing run by an outside vendor, so applying at 12:01 AM on the 1st doesn't put you at the front of the line. The money comes from the George Gund Foundation and the Sustainable Cities Fund, not the city budget. clevelandohio.gov/news/city-…

Chatham County police in Georgia have started ticketing parents whose kids ride motorized cycles the kids can't legally operate. It's a misdemeanor traffic charge with fines set by the court, and it has already happened to several parents in the county's Eastside Precinct. Georgia's dividing line is 750 watts. Under that, with working pedals, it's an ebike. Over it, the machine counts as a moped or a motorcycle, so it needs a driver's license, registration, and insurance. The three classes Georgia recognizes: Class 1 is pedal assist that cuts out at 20 mph, Class 2 adds a throttle to that same 20 mph, and Class 3 is pedal assist to 28 mph, riders 15 and up, helmets for everyone on the bike. Police Chief Jeff Hadley: "Parents should park their kid's E-bikes and motorized cycles until they can confirm that the cycle is in compliance with the law." If it doesn't fit one of those three classes, it was never an ebike, whatever the listing called it. wtoc.com/2026/08/18/chatham-…

Gen admission gates aren’t open yet, but VIP/club is. I’ve never seen the stadium this empty.

Colorado's $1,000 ebike rebate is back. Registration opens Monday, August 24 at 11 AM MT and closes August 31 at noon. You'll get $1,000 off a new ebike at the register, plus $300 more for an e-cargo bike and $300 for an adaptive one. You qualify at or below 80% of your county's area median income, or through SNAP, Medicaid, LEAP, SSDI, SSI, WIC, Section 8, or RTD LiVE. Selection is random, not first come, so registering at 11:01 doesn't mean you're first in line. The bike has to be UL 2849 or EN 15194 certified. You get one rebate per person for life, redeemed at a participating retailer within 60 days, and never retroactive on a bike you already own. There are three more windows after this one: October 19, January 11, and March 15. energyoffice.colorado.gov/eb…

A Bicycling editor rode the Trek 100 this summer, his first century on an ebike after decades of riding them unassisted. He wanted to know two things: would the battery last 100 fast miles in a group, and how hard would he still have to work. Battery planning cost him water. The spare battery takes up room he'd normally use for bottles, so carrying extra charge meant carrying less to drink. His words: range planning turned into hydration planning. He finished the 103 miles with 42% of the main battery left, after 3,500 feet of climbing at a 22.8 mph average. He also worked for it: 208 watts of his own power for four and a half hours, average heart rate 149, in Eco the whole way with assist capped at 125 watts. An ebike century is still a century. The assist setting decides how hard yours is. bicycling.com/bikes-gear/a73…

New York news: The NYC Council Speaker wants Albany to copy New Jersey's ebike law: license, registration, and insurance for every rider. It's one of 17 ebike bills at a September 30 hearing, including a ban on selling Class 3s in the one place in New York they're legal to ride, NYC. For context, New York's Class 3 isn't what most states mean by Class 3. Most states: pedal assist to 28 mph, no throttle. New York: throttle to 25 mph, legal only in cities of a million or more, which in New York means NYC. And the city already caps every ebike at 15 mph, so a Class 3 here can't legally be ridden anywhere near 25. The bill would ban selling it anyway. The Council's own Majority Leader isn't sold: "Personally, I don't think licensing and registering is going to make a difference at the local level." Streetsblog's counterpoint is drivers are licensed, registered, and insured, and they still cause the vast majority of injuries to ebike riders. Paperwork isn't protection. nyc.streetsblog.org/2026/08/…

A Virginia Beach woman is suing Amazon and Luckeep, the Chinese brand behind her $899.94 folding ebike, for $1 million in federal court. Her suit says the brakes never engaged on the bike's first ride; she hit a curb and went over the bars face first. Per the filing, the instructions never said the brakes needed adjusting or testing before riding. An ebike shipped in a box usually leaves the brake tuning to whoever opens the box. The bike showed up ready to ride. Except, allegedly, for the part that stops it. bicycleretailer.com/industry…

Orange County's DA has 26 open investigations into the PARENTS of kids riding ebikes and e-motorcycles, plus four prosecutions already filed. One mother is charged with involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment after her son fatally injured an 81-year-old Vietnam veteran. The vehicle in the manslaughter case was a Surron Ultra Bee: 12.5kW peak, which the DA's own filing calls 16 times more powerful than the 750W California allows an ebike. No operable pedals. That's a motorcycle, and California already treats it as one: license, DMV registration, plate, and insurance. Despite the headline, this isn't an ebike story. It's a motorcycle story, and the motorcycle rules already existed. nypost.com/2026/08/01/us-new…

The Federal Highway Administration cut bike lanes from its Proven Safety Countermeasures list, the strategies state and local planners point to when they make the case for a project. The list went from 28 items to 23. Speed safety cameras and variable speed limits went too. FHWA's own 2021 numbers on how bike lanes increase safety: up to 30% fewer crashes on a two-lane road, 49% on a four-lane road. No announcement, no explanation. Advocates spotted the change after DOT announced $1.7 billion in grants on July 7 with nothing for bike lanes or pedestrian projects, the same day the Transportation Secretary posted about "DEI bike lanes." The agency's statement says it is reversing policies that "decreased lane capacity and increased congestion." More than 36,000 people died on US roads last year. npr.org/2026/07/16/nx-s1-589…

PSA: If you ride a RadCity Step Thru 3, RadWagon 4, RadRunner, RadRover, or RadExpand 5, check your battery label. CPSC told owners of battery models RP-1304, RAD-S1304Y, and HL-RP-S1304 to remove them and dispose of them as hazardous waste. 31 fires, about $734,500 in property damage, some of it while the bike was sitting in storage. At the time the problem came up, I wrote about how Rad "couldn't afford" to replace them. Three weeks later it filed Chapter 11, and a company valued at $1.65 billion in 2021 sold for $13.2 million in March. New owner Life EV is replacing about 120,000 of those batteries. At 50% off. (Rad's newer Safe Shield batteries aren't in the warning.) cpsc.gov/Warnings/2026/CPSC-…

A rider on Reddit bought a closed-frame size M Gazelle ebike on Upway. The listing said it fits 5'6" to 5'10", and she's between 5'8" and 5'9" with a 32.5" inseam. When it arrived, she found she couldn't straddle the top tube without it hitting her pelvis. From the Gazelle manual in the box: "If your crotch touches the frame, it's too big for you. Don't even ride the bike around the block." But even Upway's own site pointed her at that bike from her measurements. Upway is picking it up, but she's fighting to get the shipping and restocking fees waived. Her suggestion: "ALWAYS TRY BEFORE YOU BUY, and don't believe manufacturer sizes." reddit.com/r/ebikes/comments…

Andy Woodruff built an interactive map that lets you see exactly what sunrise and sunset would look like across the US under three scenarios: current DST switching, permanent standard time, and permanent DST. For riders, sunlight matters both ways: the morning ride in and the ride home. Permanent standard time buys the morning and costs the evening. Permanent DST does the opposite. His own winter sunset lands at 4:11 PM. Permanent DST would push it to 5:11 and leave sunrise an hour later too. Zoom into your zip code. Where you sit inside your time zone shifts the whole picture: the farther east, the earlier both sunrise and sunset land. andywoodruff.com/blog/where-…

Great news! California's AB 1557 is dead. It would have cut Class 1 and 2 ebikes from 20 mph to 16, capped them at 250W continuous, and barred shops from selling anything faster. 16 mph is slower than a lot of people pedal without a motor. Held under submission in Assembly Appropriations on May 14, hasn't moved since. SB 1167 is moving the other way. It defines an ebike as 750W max, 20 mph on throttle, 28 mph pedal-assist, and requires every bike sold in California to carry a skyward-facing frame label with its class and top speed. Anything faster gets sold as what it is: an e-moto that needs registration and a license. Senate passed it 37-0 on May 26. Assembly next. streetsforall.org/blog/e-bik…

eBikes sold on Amazon under the Aipas brand showed the UL safety mark. Amazon and UL sued, saying the certification wasn't real, and this month the Chinese companies behind the brand agreed to a permanent injunction barring them from using the mark. No admission of wrongdoing. WIRED was served an Aipas Facebook ad carrying the UL logo in mid-July, after the injunction. Another one has been running since April. For scale: 45 deaths tied to lithium-ion battery fires in mobility devices from 2017 to 2024, 19 of those ebikes. New York City logged 277 battery fires in 2024. The logo on the listing is not the certification. wired.com/story/an-ebike-com…

There is no federal safety standard for ebike batteries. The rule your imported ebike is certified against, 16 CFR 1512, covers frames, brakes, and reflectors. Not one line about lithium-ion. CPSC wants to change that: A proposed rule would make UL 2849 (ebikes), UL 2272 (personal e-mobility devices), and UL 2271 (replacement packs) mandatory, and it reaches conversion kits and aftermarket chargers too. Public comment closes August 24. Docket CPSC-2025-0012. federalregister.gov/document…
