Vitalik opened Devcon 8 in a yellow smiley mask and a cloak covered in eyes. 🎭
Asked why, he joked that "mask" is an anagram of "scam."
But the costume fit the keynote. His whole talk came down to one question: who do you trust?
His answer, in plain English:
🔓 Open source. If you can't read the code, you're trusting a stranger.
🧮 Verify, don't believe. Use math and proofs to check that software and hardware do what they claim.
🪪 Prove one fact, not your whole life. Zero-knowledge proofs can show you're over 18 without handing over your ID.
🧠 Keep your "second brain" local. Run AI on your own device where you can.
☢️ "Treat data as toxic waste by default. If you can, don't collect it at all."
Why this is an $ETH story: days after the record $6.3B Binance hack, the lesson is the same. A friendly face isn't security. A system anyone can check is. That's the job Ethereum was built for.
The honest part: Vitalik hasn't explained the outfit. The "Shoggoth" reading (a monster hiding behind a friendly AI mask) comes from people on X. And he ended by saying the answer isn't powerful corporations OR "charismatic influencers" who claim to fight them.

Vitalik Buterin Warns AI Could Put The World Under One Powerful Player
Ethereum (@ethereum) $ETH co-founder Vitalik Buterin (@VitalikButerin) says the world is heading toward a dangerous model of AI security.
He believes slowing AI development is no longer a realistic option.
Speaking at Devcon 8, Mumbai, the Ethereum cofounder warned against concentrating powerful AI tools within a single organization.
Buterin warned this could fuel an arms race as excluded groups seek access to those tools.
He presented Defensive, Decentralized Acceleration (DAC) as an alternative built on open-source software, verifiable hardware, and cryptographic proofs.
Buterin argued that without a better approach, domination could become the default.
