I'm like Beetlejuice but if someone on the internet says "microwave ovens" too many times.

A 1,000,000th reminder the crucial importance of basic research. Ambros and Ruvkun were looking into understanding nematode genetics and development, not looking for a drug, and ended up opening an entire new area in biology
"was the first author on the 1993 'Cell' paper cited by the Nobel Committee"
but did not receive the Nobel Prize.
Is this 2024 or 1962?
Congratulations to our 2024 medicine laureate Victor Ambros ✨
This morning he celebrated the news of his prize with his colleague and wife Rosalind Lee, who was also the first author on the 1993 'Cell' paper cited by the Nobel Committee.
#NobelPrize
1962 of course being a recent time a woman named Rosalind was snubbed for this exact same prize

Awesome to see that some of the winners are papers from 5+ years ago. TBH still holding out hope that our "perytons are microwave ovens" paper will be nominated for one of these someday. @improbresearch

This is the face Delta makes right after I give her 20 tiny kisses in a row on her forehead 🥹
To be loved by a dog is like nothing else.

ALT A fluffy corgi sits on the floor with a human’s arm and hand petting her back. Her ears are slightly back and she is looking up lovingly directly at the camera.
As always, Delta just looks happy to be included in the big dog group in the pictures from her dog walker.

Well, that's it. I've peaked in life having been cited in XKCD *and* making it into the alt text. Going to retire to nerd heaven now.

Secretly hoping my colleagues at Perimeter, who mostly know me for non-research stuff, do their daily @xkcd check and think "hey, that's Emily's last name!" 😂

This was such a great event!
Physics is not separate from society, and it was great to see so many faculty, staff, students, and postdocs, take an hour out of their day solving the biggest questions in physics, to discuss wider societal issues and their impact on physics culture.
A fun article about FRBs!
It's rare to see the peryton/microwave ovens mentioned somewhere without my name attached to it, but I supposed that's the way of the world once you move out of academia. Ngl, still stings a bit.
When an astronomer discovered a brief bolt of energy that could travel billions of light-years, he was astonished. Then decades went by without evidence of another on.natgeo.com/3rwAitu
