Bill Klein was a great colleague and a strong supporter of sea urchin research. RIP

William (Bill) Klein passed away last week. He was the Chair of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology Dept @MDAndersonNews . He pioneered studies in gene regulation using sea urchins, & retinal/muscle development in mice. @___SDB___ @the_Node

"...while coralline cover is greater in urchin-dominated sites (or “barrens”) subject to intense grazing than in kelp-dominated sites with low urchin densities, coralline communities in urchin barrens are significantly less diverse..."

Fun fact 1. "Echinoderm" is derived from the Ancient Greek for "hedgehog (prickly)-skin".
Fun fact 2. Echinobase is hiring! We need a bioinformatician (bit.ly/2X7dsnu) & a biocurator (bit.ly/2X4ciZB). Come join the echino-team! (We're anything but prickly!)
Just like this baby seastar taking its first steps, Echinobase continues to grow! We're seeking a skilled biocurator to make sense of the heaps of new echinoderm literature, genes and genomes.
Please RT #biocuration

Echinobase is growing! We're seeking a skilled bioinformatician to assemble, annotate and analyze echinoderm genome and transcriptome sequences and help improve our website. Please RT.

New paper in PNAS from the Ben-Tabou de-Leon lab describing the regulatory similarities in the control and effects of VEGF signaling in vascularization and sea urchin spiculogenesis -- points to an ancestral tubulogenesis program common to both!

Do you remember when? 25 yrs ago SGD went online, way before going online was cool-we were one of only 2000 websites back then! 1000s of gene pages, 1000s of users, tens of 1000s of papers, 100s of 1000s of annotations, and millions of hits later, we are still #yeast's best bud!
Superb!

From echinoderm expression patterns to inferred ancestral states -- this paper has it all!
Great work from @Erky321 and @echinerd
Also, 👍👍 for the gif abstract
