Perspective check: Our solar system hurtles around the Milky Way Galaxy in a corkscrew fashion at 500,000 mph (800,000 km/h). And It still takes 230 million years to make one trip. 🤯
We were taught that Earth orbits the Sun in a closed circle. In reality, Earth has never returned to the same point in space once in 4.5 billion years.
Right now, the Sun is carrying Earth and every planet around the center of the Milky Way at 230 km/s (828,000 km/h), more than 18,000 kilometers every 80 seconds.
Because the Solar System is tilted 60.2° to the galactic plane and bobs up and down through the galactic disc roughly every 30 million years, the planets trace open 3D corkscrew helices across deep space rather than flat loops.
The last time the Sun stood where it stands today, one Galactic Year (230 million years) ago, the very first dinosaurs were only beginning to appear on Earth. Since forming 4.6 billion years ago, our Sun has completed only 20 laps.
Two heavy hitters, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1818) and Bram Stoker's Dracula (1897) helped transform #Halloween from a traditional harvest festival into a celebration of Gothic horror and the macabre we know today. 🧛♂️🦇🧟♂️🎃
You never know just how powerful a written note can be. And we can all do it, merely with a pen and paper. A thank you note, or words of encouragement or support, can make a difference in someone’s life. 🗒️🖊️
I'm sorry we never got a chance to meet, but getting this note from Dolly really had a an impact on me. She definitely didn't have to take the time to do it. Even for a kid who mostly listened to rap music, she was an icon. A superstar in every sense. Rest easy Dolly. And thank you for the kind words.

“Do I contradict myself?
Very well then I contradict myself,
(I am large, I contain multitudes.)”
The world wants simple labels, but Whitman reminds us that we’re allowed to change our minds or hold contradictory ideas. 🤔

Mission specialists like @Astro_Christina train for all roles so they can jump in wherever they’re needed. Sometimes that means fixing vital machinery, like the spacecraft toilet.

Captivated by the @netflix documentary Apollo 11. 🌓And it’s remarkable how JFK’s words in 1961 set in motion a chain of events that culminated in a manned moon mission in 1969. The power of declaring a dream and building it into existence.
