I helped build Perky Jerky from $0 to $30M/year as employee #1. 30K stores. Sponsored a Nascar. Millions raised. 10 years of monster wins and learning the hard way. It’s been an interesting week for our community, so thought this could be helpful. If you’re building in #CPG, let’s ride 🤠

Dinner with an exec/friend at a large national property management company tonight. This person oversees ~150k apartments; access to an insane amount of data. Current multifamily market in most of the country is worse than S&L, .com bust, or the GFC. Worst they’ve seen. Class A mostly fine, decent rent growth. However: - credit scores at class A have gone down meaningfully over the past 3 years. - more people are paying rent via credit card. - average bank account balance noticeably lower than even 2 years ago - class A tenants stretched thin, living beyond their means. 20k comes in, 20k goes out every month. - starting to see these renters move down a tier Class B: - simply too many apartments, we built too much new stuff. Ripple effect is enormous. - fewer renters tomorrow than today. Same store foot traffic noticeably down year over year. Some markets down 40-50% - considering dropping rents below $700 a month on some 1beds in major southern markets. Class C: - looking at degrading NOI. Rents aren’t growing for a long time, but expenses keep creeping up - more renters are one missed paycheck away from disaster than they can remember seeing in decades - tenants aren’t paying rent because they simply don’t have it - wage growth has not kept up Lenders: - some major investment funds, household names, haven’t paid their mortgages in 2-3 years. Banks won’t foreclose because “X is a big client.” Mexican standoff. - a roof leak gets ignored, becomes water damage, then mold, then a down building. Buildings are rapidly deteriorating as some owners choose cash preservation over funding losses. - number of pre-foreclosure and REO deals is the highest as a % of total units they can recall. - data providers know it’s bad, but they’re paid to sell optimism to owners/lenders. So every forecast is “it will probably get a little better next year maybe” and that gets regurgitated at investment committees all over. I asked “how do you think this ends?” “Not sure. My gut says slowly then suddenly, and things will get really bad. Been doing this 40 years, you can feel it in the air. But, there’s a chance it’s just a decade of tolerable pain. I’m praying for that.”

Foursquare was acquired last month. The outcome was disappointing. It's taken me a while to write this, but I think I'm finally done grieving it. Here are some thoughts on our final years, an effort to honor the team who helped build & maintain FSQ's legacy, and my attempt to finally get some closure. teendrama.substack.com/p/som…

.@sama says the advice to pick one thing to build and pour all your focus into it no longer applies. "The canonical advice that was correct two years ago was, 'Pick one, and put all your effort into it, because you can't build all 30 things.'" "You can now build all 30 things. And you can get people to use them all. And you can work more on the ones that work." "So I think this mindset of lots of ideas, quick feedback, and being open to a lot of things not working is great for this new era for how people build."

We’re blown away by the response to the @Muse Connector Platform — with over 2,000 submissions in just a few days since launch. We believe this is the beginning of a new era for developers big and small, and we’re so grateful for the response from the community to date. For those that haven’t yet, you can learn more about the platform and submit your connectors here: muse.ai/platform

Posted a video on another platform a few hours ago gauging interest in a marketplace for moms that had big careers before babies that still want to work but on a different schedule. Has completely blown up with interest from women. Not fully baked, but something should exist where women dont have to start their own consulting firms but can opt into a role/project on their own terms that are highly qualified. See plenty of vertical marketplaces for “legal on demand” but something more specific for this demographic. Based on the comments so far, women WANT to keep working but need the baby years to be flexible. Anyone want to build this?

Thanks, Peter! This is the beginning of the end for destructive wildfires. In a country that loses ~$500B every year to wildfires, even tiny gains make for huge savings, to say nothing of the incalculable value of lives and homes.
Congrats to @PalmerLuckey and Anduril for winning the Wildfire XPRIZE - for detecting and suppressing a wildfire within 10 minutes of ignition!

Bringing autonomy to the next fight: wildfires. Anduril has earned first place in the Autonomous Wildfire Response Track within the @xprize competition. Our solution manages the entire wildfire lifecycle with minimal human intervention. Lattice coordinates assets across air, land, and space to detect and respond faster. The award reflects Anduril's deep experience building firefighting tech including more than two years of dedicated work with XPRIZE. During the rigorous finals test in the Alaskan wilderness, our platform autonomously detected, fought, and suppressed live fires. Destructive wildfires are a global crisis. Anduril and XPRIZE are pioneering faster, more scalable and more automated ways to fight them.

Rainmaker has raised $100M to become the world’s best lab for weather modification and atmospheric science. Thank you @noavctech @upfrontvc @DCVC @lowercarbon @DreamVenturesVC and other visionary partners. We are aggressively hiring and scaling our research org to create a flywheel of atmospheric data collection, synthesis, understanding, and intervention. We will solve the weather and we will set the stage for the terraformation of Earth. More in my essay below.

”[Costco] is like free customer acquisition.” Conor Begley (@‌Conorbegley), Co-founder of @‌FathersBrewing, on the secret he learned from Ben Weiss who sold Bai to Pepsi for $1.7B: ”Sure, we have to spend some money [on roadshows], but we're getting thousands and thousands of new customers in like 72 hours." "Any business really has one or two really effective channels that they can grow through. Beer is not a direct-to-consumer channel. It's too heavy, the shipping's too expensive." "For us, it's become very clear that Costco is one of those channels. So that's one. Now how do you find the second one?"
I am betting the farm on Costco for Fathers. Would love the the CPG clan's advice on how to win even more there! --- ROADSHOWS ✅ I am going ALL IN. Like ALL ALL in here. Roadshows are the promo displays at the end of the Costco aisle. My observation, other alcohol brands punt these. Small black table. A few print outs. Generic sampling staff. 🫡 Personally working every single day I can 🏟️ 15,000 people a weekend to tell the brand story to. 🕺 Dancing beer costumes 🔈 Speakers and music 🍾 Custom bottle openers 🪑 Custom table wrap 🍺 Hops and malt 🪧 6 foot pop up displays ❄️ Massive fridges to be the ONLY cold beer in Costco. 🤝 6am pre-site visits to meet managers --- I got great advice from Ben Weiss here about how Bai went HAM on roadshows to build their brand (acquired $1.7B 💰). I'm going to ride Costco to taking Fathers national. What else should I be doing with Costco to win??

I just read what Zuck wrote about Muse connectors. A few things I think this means: 1. We’re witnessing the agentification of consumer apps. 2. Zuck believes Muse reaching 100M+ users feels entirely possible. 3. Whoever you connect to becomes your new landlord, so pick carefully. 4. Connectors become the new app listings (valuable real estate). 5. Being early could be as valuable as being early to the App Store in 2009. 6. Meta sees what people want, which providers convert, and what users will pay. That gives it the power to rank connectors, charge for distribution, and launch competing services. 7. The opportunity map includes agent native APIs, connector agencies, SEO for agents, identity and reliability infrastructure, and vertical connector marketplaces. 8. We’re moving from humans choosing apps to agents choosing businesses. 9. Every business will need an agent strategy, just like every business needed a mobile strategy. 10. Kinda crazy to say but a 3 person API company could reach 10M+ users through one great connector. 11. Connectors could create an entirely new second-order economy. The biggest opportunity may be helping businesses distribute, price, and optimize their services for agents. 12. Your API becomes more important than your app. Weird to think about but true. 13. Zuck wants Muse to own the moment between wanting something and getting it. He is coming for the app economy. Will he win? Right now it's Instinct vs Muse vs Grokbot. TBD.
Opening access for developers to build Muse connectors. You bring the API -- Muse brings the agent, the browser, and the context of what the person actually wants. People reach your service just by asking for it, and their agent takes it from there. New connectors are live today. Come build with us. muse.ai/platform
