Nobody wants to go back to the war on drugs or criminalizing possession, but we should introduce more friction into acquiring marijuana and better police public use. Recommend reading @ehaspel’s article in @compactmag.
A 17-year-old was arrested in the latest fatal subway shooting—reportedly sparked by a dispute over smoking pot on the train. Yesterday, I saw a group of high schoolers smoking pot on the streets of SoHo. Yes, teens have always smoked pot. But now that marijuana is legal for adults, and today's products are more potent, young people seem increasingly emboldened to use it openly. And now we're seeing a deadly confrontation from it. Will our state legislators reconsider Raise the Age and strengthen marijuana enforcement? Will Hochul? abc7ny.com/post/nypd-marijua…

My deep dive on the "A.I.-driven" Alpha School, revealing their internal learning and enrollment data for the first time, just as the network expands into public education. There is a big gap between the marketing and reality. nytimes.com/2026/10/23/us/al…

From a parent, daycare provider, and state perspective, having infants (especially those <1 year old) in licensed programs is often not ideal -- parents tend to prefer providing care themselves during that period, it's very expensive for providers (plus the classrooms are hard to staff- you can love babies and not want to spend 250+ days a year in a room with eight of them!), and subsidies for those rooms cost states a lot of money per child. At-Home Infant Care programs can be a win-win-win in this respect, especially (in my opinion) if chained with good paid family leave following a birth.
Minnesota (and later Montana) introduced an At-Home Infant Care (AHIC) program that took what the state would have paid to childcare providers as subsidis and instead paid parents directly to stay home with their newborn. It was a huge success!

🚨New report out today🚨 There's a lot of discussion about when young children should be home with their parents. @BahalSanya and I make the case for reviving a successful but forgotten program from Minnesota and Montana that helped new parents stay home with their infants. 🧵

🚨 We launched the Stanford Childcare Model, estimating supply and demand in the early care and education market, with a dashboard comparing effects of several different childcare policies. We hope it's useful to those working on childcare affordability, access, and quality! 🚨

While I don't have any interest in making recreational pot a hill to die on, I do think conventional wisdom erroneously believes that rec marijuana is by now widely legal in Europe when it's actually fully legal in only 8 countries worldwide (Canada, Czechia, Georgia, Germany, Luxembourg, Malta, South Africa, and Uruguay), along with half the U.S. states. A couple others have de facto legalization (Mexico, Thailand), and plenty of countries have medical legalization and/or have decriminalized small amounts of possession. But with regards to how we treat recreational weed, the U.S. is part of a pretty small group of outliers.
Nordic countries have high alcohol taxes, fairly restrictive laws for marijuana, and assertive policing methods that are similar to Bloomberg-era New York. Many American liberals conveniently ignore that reality.

"The right-wing response to vice can be excessively punitive. But liberals are likely to be caught between societal deterioration and resurgent interest in harsh laws unless they come up with an anti-vice politics of their own." 💯

Because it can be difficult to define virtue and vice, too many liberals today have abandoned moral language altogether. That’s a mistake — I write in @compactmag that we can both reject right-wing Puritanism and libertarian anything-goes hedonism to forge a better path forward.

While I focus in my essay on examples like sports betting, recreational marijuana, and un-age-gated porn, I think this principle extends to what @ajlamesa talks about regarding public order— the wild speeding and covered license plates, fare jumping, blasting music without headphones in small public areas, reckless use of e-scooters, etc. All of these sorts of things are implicated in questions of making (or not making) virtuous choices toward one’s fellow human, and they are choices those of us on the left should have a vocal opinion on and be willing, when necessary, to make policy around.

Loved this piece. I’ve thought for a while that any effective anti-vice campaign will probably have to come from the left (I was pessimistic about this. Perhaps a bit less so now.)

Pleased to be in @compactmag today arguing that liberals need to start leading, via democratic processes, a new front against anything-goes vice culture -- or else we'll end up working against the very principles we hold dear.

The effects of the legalization of vices like weed and gambling are provoking a backlash—even in Massachussets. To meet the moment, liberals must update their laissez-faire attitudes, says @ehaspel: compactmag.com/article/liber…

Every time you think “could the sports betting industry possibly be more cartoonishly awful, rapacious, and deleterious to the common good?” and the sportsbooks always jump in from the top rope shouting a hearty “You bet!!!”
