Applications are open for a 4-year PhD examining how Generative AI is shaping student learning and assessment in higher education.
The project will use observational and experimental studies to generate rigorous, evidence-based insight for the sector.

In this new paper with Arthur White and Jason Wyse, we discuss contextualisation - how the research question influences what data are used, what cluster method is selected for analysis, and how the resulting cluster output is interpreted and evaluated:

The Open University Learning Analytics Dataset (OULAD) available from Kuzilek et al. <doi:10.1038/sdata.2017.171> is a fantastic resource for teaching and research. My new 'ouladFormat' R package (cran.r-project.org/web/packa…) loads, cleans and formats the OULAD for data analysis. 1/2
Excited to attend ‘Rethinking Assessment in the Mathematical Sciences in Times of Generative AI’ in the University of Glasgow today. This workshop is part of the IMA, LMS & RSS Higher Education Teaching and Learning Workshop Series. Fingers crossed that my flight over is on time!
Enjoyed attending Student Affairs Ireland Summer Seminar #SAI2024 My main take aways are that 1) be clear what you mean when you say student success & 2) a successful orientation for a student is not likely receiving information about college but rather making new friend(s)
Excited to be presenting ‘Mathematics and statistics support beyond the timetabled hours: Results from a scoping review’ at the #ukcots24 conference today. This study was undertaken with @Claire__Mullen and @AnthonyCMathSup
Ever wondered what mathematics and statistics support higher education institutes offer students outside of the classroom? In this new scoping systematic review (link.springer.com/article/10…) with @Claire__Mullen
and @AnthonyCMathSup, we answer that question and more. #openaccess

Excited for my first day as a lecturer in the Trinity College Dublin School of Computer Science and Statistics!
"...pre-pandemic almost 70% of the lecture formats classified by students were traditional in nature, with 20% classified as containing some interactions, and the remainder as including group work. While students did not perceive great differences in terms of the benefits to 1/2
learning between the face-to-face and online lecture formats in the majority of modules, those who experienced interactions or group work in lectures before lockdown, reported a greater drop than those who experienced a traditional lecture." New paper!

Exciting times @UCDMathStat! We hiring 3 (3!!!) Assistant Profs in Statistics for Data Science (2 x permanent, 1 x 5-year)
These roles will enhance and broaden the School’s current strengths in statistics and its contribution to data science in UCD and the wider community.
Thank you to my students for nominating me for a UCD Teaching and Learning Award #UCDTLAwards. It was wonderful to read the thoughtful comments and to know that summer modules can be engaging!
