RuneQuest's world of Glorantha is unique because Greg Stafford, who created it, didn't encounter fantasy literature till he was in college. Instead, he read mythology, like Edith Hamilton and Thomas Bulfinch. So when Glorantha was created, it was a world of myth, NOT fantasy or swords & sorcery. The gods were central to the myths in a way that is not so common in other systems, and gives the game an unusual feel.

There's a new episode up, in honor of the day, "The Columbian Exchange and 'the Seams of Pangaea'." This is a major expansion of my previous work on the Columbian Exchange, replete with factoids! Stay for the controversial closing takes! thehistoryoftheamericans.com…

Israel-Palestine coverage on @Wikipedia has been reshaped since Oct 7 by a core group of roughly three dozen ideologically-motivated editors, the Gang of 40. NPOV conducted an analysis of the six leaders of this group which shows how it works. Our reports, published here, reveal how this accretive, mostly under-the-radar strategy run by a handful of accounts managed to undermine knowledge infrastructure on the most contentious geopolitical topic today. The Key Tactics that our reports reveal: + They worked in groups of 2, 3, 4, 5, or all 6, rotating in ways that obscure coordination. + Pairs overlapped on up to 1,463 articles, and all six converged on 64 pages. + Up to 90% of their edits went to this one topic, sustained for up to two decades. + Deletion sprints cleared material faster than others could respond. - One account removed 14,312 characters from the Labour antisemitism article in two edits, two minutes apart - ~25,500 from Amnesty's in 22 edits; - ~11,600 from the Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's in 23 minutes. + The group shaped the Reliable Sources discussions that decide which outlets can be cited anywhere on Wikipedia. - Western and NATO sources were dismissed, while outlets like Al Jazeera were defended. + They logged 18,000+ edits on Wikipedia's administrator noticeboards, where disputes over conduct are decided. + On talk pages, volume stood in for consensus: one editor posted 11 times in four hours on the Zionism page. + On Oct 7, 2023, with the attack still underway, one of the Six renamed the article on it from "Hamas attack on Israel" to "Gaza−Israel conflict." + May 2024: another removed the section on the Oct 7 attack from the Gaza war article, including the Nova festival massacre, 251 hostages and reports of sexual violence. + Eight editors were topic-banned for conduct. Not one of their edits was reversed by the ArbCom proceeding. The pages they built were never audited. << Full reports in the Substack, link below >>

No movie I know of, but covered in excellent detail by @jbhenneman on his History of the Americans podcast (here’s the first episode on Soto podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas…)
Has there been a movie about that? It would be extraordinary, surreal. Like factual science fiction, an alien planet.

Reading my third David Gemmell book. I read an e-version of Legend, but the found 7 of the first 8 books in the Drenai Saga at a second hand bookstore and grabbed them all. Big thanks to @rock_swords @MatthewHarffy @SA_McKay & @JHillAuthor for highlighting an author I missed

+recently read @SA_McKay ‘s Singers of the Sword Song & picked up the sequel. I recommend the 1st book & look forward no. 2. I think the nicest think I can say switching between Gemmell’s fantasy and McKay’s is that Sword Song definitely put me in mind of Gemmell. Good company!

Unfortunately everybody's favorite history podcaster @TheHistoryOfTh2 (a/k/a my friend Jack Henneman) is currently locked out of X due to account hijacking. But his tribute to our mutual friend Andrew Wimsatt is a must-read. jackhenneman.substack.com/p/…

Same.
Two stories about human nature weighed on my soul when I was young: Kitty Genovese and the Stanford Prison Experiment. Neither fit the world I actually saw around me. But both seemed to say that people are monsters. And both stories, as taught to me, were bullshit.

I should have also mentioned, with all due deference to Taft, I’d appoint Lincoln as Chief Justice.

Some on the far left react viscerally against any acknowledgment of America’s historical virtues. Some on the far right react viscerally against any acknowledgment of America’s historical vices. For a liberal patriot, a history of America in all its triumphs and tragedies is far more inspiring than either hagiography or demonology.
