New report out w/ @katemfitzgerald where we analyse a million tweets during the Republican primary debate. Basically, X is flooded with platform manipulation, isn't doing enough to moderate content, and has no clear strategy for political disinformation. eprints.qut.edu.au/242533/

Of 25 interventions designed to reduce partisan animosity, 23 worked; a few of them had pretty large effect sizes (d = .52)! Seems like partisan animosity, though increasingly and alarmingly extreme, might not be a strongly held belief.
A megastudy on a national sample of partisans (n=32,059) tested 25 interventions designed to reduce anti-democratic attitudes & partisan animosity. The top 3 were: -intergroup contact -addressing mistrust in the media -creating a common ingroup identity strengtheningdemocracychalle…

Comm researchers: know of studies or samples of YouTube or TikTok users reporting what they watched? (genre, niches, diversity of content, particular vids). Lots on amount viewed, but less on actual content. @ICA_CAT @bowmanspartan @alicetiara @McEwanInComm

I'm thinking along the lines of Webster & Ksiazek's work on audience duplication. How much audience overlap is their among 1000 random YouTube or TikTok viewers? To what degree have those platforms achieved true fragmentation?

Gratifying to read coverage of the downside of social media that doesn't oversimplify the research & avoids blaming the usual scapegoats (Facebook, echo chambers, misinformation, algorithms). Love the cool illustration, too! newyorker.com/culture/annals…
Terrific #ica22! So many great papers (incl. @jbrundidge & @RKellyGarrett's paper on affective polarization, worth checking out!) & great reunions (w/ Mina Choi [pictured], @JoeBBayer, @UTsharon). Wish I could've seen more of you. Perhaps #ica23?❤️

Been awhile since I blogged, but Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter seems a good occasion to reflect on the portability of influence. elliotpanek.blogspot.com/202…
Interesting finding supporting 'partisan echo chamber' hypothesis: exposing FoxNews viewers to CNN tempers their views. This runs counter to @chris_bail's findings that partisan Twitter users double down when exposed to opposing views. So, echo chamber dynamics differ by medium?
🚨NEW PREPRINT w/ @dbroockman. We conducted a real-world experiment to study the effects of partisan media. In Sept 2020, we paid people who normally watch Fox News to instead watch CNN. Median person was paid $15/hour for 7 hrs/week for 4 wks to watch CNN. Thread on results 1/

Reddit has 52 million active users a day, and 1 in 4 people ages 25-29 use Reddit. I chat with social media researcher and author, ⁦@elpanek⁩, about his book; Understanding Reddit. We covered the evolution of social dynamics within this understudied network of communities.
