THE DOUBLE STANDARD?
17 tonnes of critically endangered baby eels allocated for consumption and agriculture in France this season, while around 100 million arrive in the UK annually, left to perish, trapped and forgotten
WHY the double standard?

THE FAKE 60/40 PROMISE

France’s 2024/25 national glass eel quota allocated 39,000kg to restocking and 26,000kg to consumption. A 60/40 split on paper. But what actually happened to the eels?

It beggars belief. Eel fisheries shutting down all over Europe and this lot carry on regardless. Plenty of 💶 involved

17 TONNES of critically endangered European glass eels allocated for consumption & farming in France.
Millions of juveniles taken from a species in crisis for plates and profit.
How can European eels recover when France keeps taking their future?

🇫🇷 Sustainable? Prove It!
France’s 2026/27 glass eel quota: 43 tonnes. 17.2t for consumption, including farming
SEG calls French fisheries “sustainable” while the European eel remains critically endangered. How can killing a critically endangered species be sustainable?

GLASS EELS: DOUBLE STANDARD?
France catch 55 tonnes (22t for consumption, 33t for restocking) of Critically Endangered glass eels. The UK fishery is unauthorised.

RIVER SEVERN: A SILENT SLAUGHTER?
A dark cold, moonlit night on the River Severn. Millions of critically endangered baby eels, exhausted and struggling, trapped against stone walls, perishing and left to rot
Who is responsible? Who will be held accountable?

Millions of critically endangered baby eels migrate up the River Severn every year, blocked by man-made weirs and barriers.

MILLIONS OF GLASS EELS ENTER THE SEVERN ANNUALLY. WHERE IS THE MONITORING DATA?
How many are lost to disease, predators, weirs and barriers? How many survive to adulthood? How many silver eels reach the sea?
WHERE ARE THE FIGURES? WHERE IS THE EVIDENCE

A huge thank you to the AsdaFoundation @asda for fully funding today’s FishingTheMind community session!days like today remind us that it’s never just about the catch. It’s about getting outside, taking a breath, connecting with others, and giving our minds a well deserved break
With a 8.7 mtr tide running today I didn’t have much hope of catching any fish so I was super happy to end up with 2 salmon and a nice pike @MattHayesfish @MattyH02 @severnpiscator
For weeks, we followed one elusive European eel that had claimed a hidden home beneath the riverbed. Returning each week, we captured a rare glimpse into its secret summer world—an underwater story of survival, patience and instinct.

EA SHOW US THE PROOF.

The Environment Agency has closed the UK glass eel fishery, citing huge numbers of glass eels allegedly dying at an APB holding centre.
If those deaths are being used to justify shutting down a fishery, the public deserves the evidence.
Where is it
Stu on or river Severn club water had this little 18lb er yesterday let’s hope the river stays in its bank over the next few months @MattHayesfish good luck to everyone on the banks
Another cracking salmon today plenty in the river Severn this year @MattHayesfish @MattyH02 @severnpiscator

@EnvAgency cannot reasonably demand robust evidence from others while legitimate questions about the effectiveness of its own infrastructure remain unanswered.
If @DefraGovUK expects accountability from others, the public should expect the same from the EA.

Nobody is claiming the Abbey Mill pass never works.
The issue is whether @EnvAgency can demonstrate when it works, under what conditions and with what success rate.
Where are the maintenance records, flow data, passage-efficiency figures and biological monitoring?

@EnvAgency has acknowledged that low river flows can affect fish-passage structures.
There have also been observations raising concerns about stranded or dead juvenile eels during low-water conditions.
That makes proper monitoring even more important.

The irony is difficult to ignore.
@EnvAgency expects others to produce evidence that eel interventions work, yet the evidence disclosed so far does not demonstrate the same scrutiny of its own infrastructure.
Where is the accountability?
