It looked way better after being cooked than when it was raw 🫠

Who would have thought the most impactful things I learned on the Formlabs Studio 1 launch had nothing to do with resin 3D printing 😅

More importantly, it's shown me the way I behave/feel about the relationship isn't in line with who I want to be. It's valid for me to feel under valued and adjust my contributions, but I don't want to close opportunities or damage relationships b/c I feel like I deserve more.

What this launch has shown me though, was that my view on their marketing strategy wasn't entirely accurate. Gifting 4Ls to YouTubers making silly things for views is unlikely to drive Form 4 or 4L sales, but likely translated into sales for the Studio 1. It was an end game play.

I've noticed over the years that these feelings have soured the relationship a bit for me. I still appreciate how they've helped me grow, but I also have a strong sense of self worth and it has created a bit of saltyness for me.

As a power user with direct communication to some of their engineers, I also provide a lot of feedback to their team and catch bugs that help improve their products. The requirement for YouTube views makes my contributions and short form content feel under valued or appreciated.

As someone who's a multi discplinary engineer, runs a business in consulting, additive, manufacturing, product design, AND makes content, a lot of my following consists of people who are, what I thought was, Formlabs' main target demographic (ie. who can afford 4s and 4Ls)

For the longest time I never understood their marketing teams narrow view of when/who to sponsor. I occasionally get to beta test and receive special support or resin, but I get shot down when asking for larger items specifically because my YouTube viewership isn't there

#2 - I misjudged their approach to marketing and brand building. They actually had a multi year "end game" to get to the Studio 1 which is quite humbling and a reminder that, while I'm surprisingly good at marketing, I am also an engineer with zero training in it

As a Form 4 user it sucks and I feel like they should extend the price drops to existing 4 users (many who have supported the company for a long time), but they're clearly not afraid of self cannablization and if they don't do it, someone else eventually will.

#1 - Embrace self cannablization. The existing product differentiation between Form 4 and Studio 1 is muddy. The Studio 1 can do a lot of things the Form 4 can but at a much lower cost. Some resins on it are also half the price of the same resins for Form 4 and it comes with OMM.

I learned two things about the Formlabs Studio 1 launch, both of which had nothing to do with resin 3D printing 😅 Thread below 👇
