ZH-lang media is reporting that Microsoft has closed its AI facilities in Shanghai's Zhangjiang AI Island. When launched in 2019, Microsoft's Zhangjiang AI&IoT lab was touted as the largest of its kind. Assuming these reports are accurate, this story is notable. Microsoft has been under increasing US pressure to derisk from China (see @SamBresnick/@KathleenCurlee piece linked below for more). They've encouraged PRC-based AI researchers to relocate elsewhere. DeepSeek reportedly recruited some researchers from Microsoft Asia (although I doubt these researchers were the major difference-makers). Microsoft has 10k staff based in China. Microsoft's balancing act b/t US+PRC is getting more and more difficult. More broadly, the Zhangjiang AI Island is a good case study for parsing out hype from what's real when reading news coming out of China. The Zhangjiang AI Island was announced in 2019 w/ great fanfare. Microsoft, IBM, Sequoia, Baidu, and Alibaba opened AI-focused facilities, and it was supposed to be "a dynamic AI industry cluster with a great influence in China." Today, Microsoft + IBM have pulled out; haven't heard about Sequoia/Baidu/Alibaba. At any rate, Zhangjiang is not usurping Silicon Valley as the beating heart of the global AI ecosystem anytime soon. This is obviously not a "China failed" tale, but it's a good reminder of the difficulty of parsing what's important from China tech stories. Big shoutout to Scout tool from @emergingtechobs at @CSETGeorgetown for the find here. Link to article below

Does China have a compute surplus or shortage? Another interesting article flagged by @emergingtechobs describes the complex picture as “short-term sufficiency, long-term shortage” and includes a list of local government compute projects.

.@semafor covered the latest @emergingtechobs' new blog post on the AI leaders among the S&P 500. Check out the ETO blog post 👉 bit.ly/3Y7Ljz9 And read @mizy_judah's piece 👇
Exclusive for @semafor: IBM, Alphabet (Google), and Microsoft might be the Big Tech guys in the S&P 500, but Amazon — often considered behind the curve on AI — employs the most AI workers of any company on the index, according to @CSETGeorgetown. And foreign, lesser-known firms like China's Ping An are the ones to watch: semafor.com/article/10/02/20…
