As an ao3 author, here's my take on the strange discourse going around about stories being shared on drives:
I wrote it for free, I put it on the internet for free, I assumed that meant people were reading, sharing, and downloading for free
If I published a book, my expectation
Student: Ms. Rowan, I’m gonna die!
Me: Why?
Student: Ao3 is down for like a month!
Me: I know, it sucks.
Student: Wait… you know Ao3?
Me: Biblically.

Finding out that 3 of my fics are already in the google drive even though I didn’t send them but that means that someone out there likes them enough that they downloaded the PDF versions at some point like… 😭🥰
So… do I just keep writing for the weeks/month that Ao3 is down and save up chapters to do updates when she’s back, or do I find new ways to share my fic updates with y’all? What are we doing?

Just realized that when my life becomes chaotic, I start a new fic. Started HYF when I had a herniated disc. Started WWF when I had summer depression. Started AtWH after my surgery. It may not be a healthy coping mechanism but it’s the one I’m going with I guess.
