Self-medication is recognized as an effective form of treatment and is increasingly encouraged to treat minor illnesses and quickly curb further detrimental effects on human health. However, misuse of self-medication leaves devastating impacts on human health and can cause antimicrobial resistance. ◢ʜᴀᴠᴇ ʏᴏᴜ ᴇᴠᴇʀ ʜᴀᴅ ᴀɴ ɪɴᴊᴜʀʏ ᴛʜᴀᴛ ʀᴇꜰᴜꜱᴇᴅ ᴛᴏ ʜᴇᴀʟ? OR ◢ʜᴀᴠᴇ ʏᴏᴜ ʟᴏꜱᴛ ʟᴏᴠᴇᴅ ᴏɴᴇꜱ ᴅᴜᴇ ᴛᴏ ᴍᴇᴅɪᴄᴀʟ ʜɪꜱᴛᴏʀʏ ᴍɪꜱᴘʟᴀᴄᴇᴍᴇɴᴛ ᴀɴᴅ ɪꜱꜱᴜᴇꜱ? I don't know how many of those deaths occur due to abuse of self-medication, but from experience with close friends, I will say a good number of people do. And with the high doctor-to-patient ratio of 1:10000, most people wait in long queues on hospital grounds without getting adequate attention, which could lead to prevalence in self-medication (data from The Lancet Journal :“A call for Reform”) These and many more reasons are why we really need medical reform—which is hard for a country like Nigeria and other developing countries without a proper database. ✪ What if the reform comes as a system of Decentralised community with proper communal relationship between the doctors and the patients? I mean bypassing all the long hours of waiting, risks of googling your symptoms on the internet while reducing self medication—because no drug is Innocent, antibiotics can also kill you.
