Eric Pedersen—a biologist and assistant professor @Concordia —will be joining OTN's virtual study hall on March 14 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. AST! Don't miss this chance to ask him questions about the role of GAMs in the analysis of telemetry data. DM us for the link. #TelemetryTuesday

Mark your calendars! We are delighted to host ISEC 2024 at @SwanseaUni, organized by our Centre for Biomathematics and the Departments of Biosciences and Mathematics. It will be in person, with likely also a good hybrid component. And yes, we will be that close to the sea!

My first PhD chapter is out as a preprint!
We formulate step selection functions as GAM-like models, which can be fitted in mgcv. This allows for the inclusion of non-linear effects/interactions, as well as individual-level and spatial random effects!

Have you noticed the deluge of "10 Simple Rules for..." papers? They're inescapable in science like Taylor Swift on the radio. So I got cranky.... scientistseessquirrel.wordpr…

I am delighted to announce publication of the 4th edition of Linear Algebra Done Right as an Open Access book. The electronic version is legally free to the world at linear.axler.net/.
That website also has links to pre-order the print version of the book.

If you work with GAM models or hierarchical GAM models (HGAM) and need to use them for prediction, you will not want to miss this webinar by Nick Clark (aka @nj_clark). Nick has developed elegant statistical methodology for this & a cool R package to implement it. #rstats
Join us Nov 6 at 2pm US ET for the 3rd round of the Statistical Methods webinar series hosted by EFI and @esa_statistics!
@nj_clark will present on Ecological Forecasting with Dynamic Generalized Additive Models and the {mvgam} R package.

I forgot to retweet my own paper 🙃 but biggest chapter of my PhD came out finally this summer! Interesting results on genetic vs species diversity hotspots, very taxa dependent. MAJOR thank you to @thefraserlab & especially @ericJpedersen again for all the hard work & support!
Our #macrogenetic assessment of pop genetic diversity across🌎is out!
-Spatial hot + coldspots largely unrelated to latitude
-Discordance btw gen diversity + species richness
-Only some links with envtal factors; taxonomic diffs
-Nature is complicated!

Hi Twitter! what's your favourite open ecological dataset for teaching? The data should be
* clean-ish
* on at least a few species
* have two continuous things to relate to each other
* "Ecological"
Thinking of: penguins, Harvard forest data, mammal trait database

Most things don't work. But one out of every twenty things DO work. We should save space in journals for these.
Math-Twitter folks: I have a problem I need help with.
If P and R are two vectors of probabilities (so sum_i(P_i) = 1 and sum_i(R_i) = 1).
I know that: sum_i(P_i^2) > sum_i(R_i^2)
I think that this should be true:
sum_i(P_i^2/R_i^2) > 1
but I don't know how to prove it
@sp_monte_carlo, would you know if there's a straightforward proof of this?

I'm so tired of having to write about how my work is "innovative". Lots of good, important science isn't "innovative"; we need more of it! scientistseessquirrel.wordpr…
